Autonomous Vehicle Testing information

What is an autonomous vehicle testing job?

An Autonomous Vehicle Testing job involves evaluating self-driving vehicle systems to ensure safety, reliability, and compliance with regulations. Testers conduct real-world and simulated scenarios, collect data, and report performance issues. They work closely with engineers to improve vehicle software, sensors, and AI decision-making. The role may involve manual driving, monitoring automated systems, and troubleshooting failures. Strong technical skills, attention to detail, and adherence to safety protocols are essential.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in autonomous vehicle testing?

Professionals in Autonomous Vehicle Testing often spend their days designing and executing test plans for self-driving vehicles, monitoring test runs on closed tracks or public roads, and collecting and analyzing vehicle performance data. They collaborate closely with software engineers, safety drivers, and data analysts to refine vehicle algorithms and ensure all systems function safely under varied conditions. Regular responsibilities also include troubleshooting system errors, documenting findings, and providing feedback for ongoing development. This role requires adaptability and vigilance, as testing scenarios may change rapidly based on project needs and technological advancements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in autonomous vehicle testing, and why are they important?

To thrive in Autonomous Vehicle Testing, you need a background in engineering, computer science, or a related field, along with expertise in vehicle systems and safety protocols. Familiarity with testing software, data acquisition tools, driving simulators, and sometimes certifications like ISTQB are highly valuable. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills for this position. These skills ensure accurate data collection, reliable test results, and safe, collaborative testing processes essential to advancing autonomous vehicle technology.

Job description

About Voyis:

Voyis designs and manufactures high performance underwater optical sensors (lasers, cameras, lights) for autonomous underwater vehicles that expand capability and enhance understanding in underwater surveys and exploration. Our products have enabled our customers to survey more than 10,000km of ocean floor across all 7 continents, helping people better understand those remote, challenging environments. Our mission is to push the limits of what’s possible subsea and enable every underwater vehicle to see the depths like we see the surface.

All our products are proudly designed and built in Waterloo. Voyis operates independently and is part of the Covelya Group of companies.

The Role:

As a Manufacturing & Test Engineer at Voyis you will work on developing processes for assembly, calibration, and test all our underwater cameras and laser scanners. The role is focused on how we build our systems and ensure they perform consistently and reliably. You will leverage existing knowledge and expertise in high-complexity, low-volume manufacturing to improve our procedures, processes, and designs.

The role is the interface between design engineering and production teams and requires both deep technical knowledge and practical experience implementing successful procedures in a high-tech manufacturing environment. The goal is efficient and defect-free assembly with robust testing to ensure the highest standards of reliability in our underwater products. In particular this role will focus on how we calibrate and validate our camera and laser systems.

We are looking for someone who is keen to learn and grow with the role as we expand operations. We are a small team with lots of opportunities to solve interesting problems.

What you’ll do:

  • Be a subject matter expert on assembly and testing of Voyis cameras, lights, and laser-scanners, understand the design intent, performance specs, and requirements for each system.
  • Own the requirements, processes and the tooling for calibration and verification of Voyis products. Aim to improve efficiency and repeatability of key processes.
  • Prepare SOPs and other process documentation to ensure product consistency and reliability.
  • Triage issues that arise during manufacturing. Disposition non-conforming product and propose/coordinate rework where applicable.
  • Interface with design engineering (HW & SW), production, quality, and our customers to align requirements for certification of our products.
  • Manage changes and new processes from engineering or corrective actions, ensuring best practices are implemented across all teams.

Note this is an in-person role at our headquarters in Waterloo. There are opportunities for limited periods of remote work, however the job requires you to be here with the hardware and the teams that are building it.

Skills you will bring to the table:

  • 3+ years experience with high-tech assembly, testing, calibration (eg. optical systems, electronics, robotics)
  • Proven experience with New Product Introduction (NPI), low-volume manufacturing, electro-mechanical assemblies.
  • Background in optical, vision, electrical, or electro-mechanical systems as well as some experience with embedded computing technologies.
  • Engineering degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Optics, Manufacturing or Quality.
  • A proactive approach and eagerness to learn, total ownership of your work, and effective collaboration with teams across the organization

Bonus Points for:

  • Experience with computer vision tools such as OpenCV, image quality testing (eg. Imatest or similar), calibration software, photogrammetry tools (Metashape, 3DF Zephyr), and point cloud analysis packages (CloudCompare, PolyWorks).
  • Experience with lasers and laser optics as well as their evaluation and calibration.
  • Experience with electrical and mechanical design software such as Altium and SolidWorks.
  • Experience developing software tooling or hardware test automations using Python, or similar scripting languages.
  • Experience handling and testing PCBAs, using an oscilloscope, testing EMC/EMI.

The Perks:

  • Flexible work hours, lots of vacation, and a dedication to work-life balance
  • Employee-directed personal education funds to drive continuous learning
  • Profit-sharing within to celebrate our successes together
  • Regular company-wide social events
  • Health and vision benefits
  • RRSP Matching

Why you should join Voyis:

Our team is made up of problem-solvers, passionate about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible underwater. We get excited about building cool stuff and working on exciting projects like going to the Titanic, Endurance (and lots of other shipwrecks too!). We are a small and closely-knit team. Each member of our team makes a significant impact not just on our business, but on our customers as well.

Opening and Salary Information

This opening is for an active vacancy. The salary range for this role is $80,000 to $115,000 dependent on skillset and experience.
