Position Overview
The Systems Engineer - Autonomous Machines will help define the requirements and architecture for bringing an autonomous machine system together, with a primary focus on developing system integration requirements for multiple systems within an autonomous machine on the Loading, Dozing & Compaction Application Team. These systems can include a variety of onboard electronic systems as well as process and people interactions. The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, collaborates well with and through others, and is capable of making and communicating sound decisions around the trade-offs between time, resources, and quality.
Key Responsibilities
• Apply new autonomous system solutions and technologies to semi- or fully autonomous systems
• Decompose customer requirements into system-level requirements, including both hardware and software
• Manage system-level requirements and related features within DevOps
• Collaborate closely with machine system teams to determine the best approach for delivering autonomous features, including component selection and system integration
• Ensure clear documentation and requirements traceability
• Serve as a subject matter expert for surface loading autonomous machine solutions
• Communicate system readiness and technical risk to stakeholders
• Work as part of an engineering team to design, develop, integrate, and test robust, scalable features on embedded electronic control systems and vision systems for autonomous machine applications
Team & Work Environment
• Collaborate with a local team of 3-6 engineers, with the opportunity to work alongside other US-based teams
• Split time between an office setting and an on-site proving ground (approximately 20%)
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided for work at the proving ground
Requirements
Education & Experience
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field and 5-7 years of relevant experience is required OR
• Master's degree with 5+ years of experience
Key Qualifications
• Proven experience as a Systems Engineer supporting the development of autonomous machines, including the integration of software and hardware to deliver autonomous solutions
• Experience collaborating with systems integration and validation teams throughout product development, including validating software and hardware in both lab and machine environments
• Knowledge of construction equipment such as articulated dump trucks, hydraulic excavators, and wheel loaders
• Proven ability to support production products through design, implementation, customer rollout, and ongoing support
• Ability to decompose complex customer requirements into achievable technical requirements
• Experience with autonomous systems and centralized command/control system architecture
• Experience with systems integration over CAN and Ethernet
• Experience in the construction or mining industry preferred but not required
• Master's degree in an autonomy-related field a plus
Communication & Collaboration
• Skilled at communicating complex technical concepts and design trade-offs to team members and stakeholders at multiple levels
• Committed to thorough documentation of designs, requirements, and success criteria to ensure team alignment
• Clearly communicates project goals, keeps leadership informed of progress, and shares relevant updates with external partners
• Uses data-driven arguments, active listening, and tailored messaging to build consensus and influence decision-making
• Builds credibility and a strong reputation as a subject-matter expert through consistent, high-quality work
