Entry Level Ai Robotics Engineer information

What does an entry level AI robotics engineer do?

An Entry Level AI Robotics Engineer assists in designing, developing, and testing robotic systems that incorporate artificial intelligence. They typically work on tasks such as programming robots, integrating sensors, developing algorithms for machine learning, and troubleshooting hardware and software issues. Under the supervision of senior engineers, they help implement and optimize AI models to improve robotic performance and autonomy. This role often involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and learning new technologies to stay current in the rapidly evolving field of robotics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level AI robotics engineer?

To thrive as an Entry Level AI Robotics Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, robotics, and mathematics, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or C++, robotics simulation tools (e.g., ROS, Gazebo), and basic knowledge of machine learning frameworks is highly valued. Problem-solving skills, creativity, and effective teamwork help you excel in collaborative engineering environments. These competencies are vital for developing innovative robotic solutions and ensuring smooth integration of AI technologies into real-world applications.

What are some common challenges an entry level AI robotics engineer might face in their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Entry Level AI Robotics Engineers often encounter challenges such as bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation, adapting to rapidly evolving technologies, and collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams. Navigating unfamiliar hardware platforms or debugging complex sensor integrations can also be daunting at first. To overcome these challenges, new engineers should actively seek mentorship, participate in code reviews, and engage in hands-on projects, which help build confidence and foster a deeper understanding of both AI and robotics systems.

What is the difference between Entry Level Ai Robotics Engineer vs Entry Level Mechanical Robotics Engineer?

AspectEntry Level Ai Robotics EngineerEntry Level Mechanical Robotics Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science, Robotics, or related; knowledge of AI, programming, and roboticsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or related; knowledge of mechanical systems and design
Work EnvironmentSoftware development, AI algorithm implementation, robotics programmingMechanical design, prototyping, assembly, and testing of robotic systems
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, AI startups, robotics firmsManufacturing, automation, industrial robotics

Both roles involve working with robotics but focus on different aspects: AI Robotics Engineers emphasize software, algorithms, and AI integration, while Mechanical Robotics Engineers concentrate on mechanical design and hardware. The choice depends on your interest in software versus hardware within robotics.

Job description

As a Field Robotics Engineer, you will support users of a dual-arm robotics research platform used by AI labs, universities, and advanced robotics teams. Your work will focus on helping customers successfully set up and operate their systems while you build strong hands-on experience in ROS2, Linux, Docker, and robotics software workflows.

What You’ll Do

  • Help onboard new robotics platform users (universities, research labs, AI teams)
  • Assist with installation, setup, and initial system configuration
  • Provide technical support under guidance from senior engineers
  • Troubleshoot basic issues in ROS2, Linux environments, and Docker workflows
  • Help maintain and improve documentation, setup guides, and example projects
  • Support simulation and testing workflows (with mentorship)
  • Work with senior engineers to collect and communicate customer feedback
  • Participate in robotics workshops, demos, and conferences (ICRA, RSS, CoRL, etc.)
  • Travel ~30–40% with structured support and planning

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or near completion) in:
Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field
  • Exposure to ROS or ROS2 through coursework, capstone projects, internships, or research
  • Basic experience working in Linux (Ubuntu) environments
  • Familiarity with Python and/or C++
  • Exposure to Git/GitHub in academic or team projects
  • Basic understanding of robotics concepts:
    • Coordinate frames and transforms
    • Intro kinematics concepts
    • Sensors and actuators (high-level understanding is fine)
  • Willingness and excitement to learn robotics systems in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to document technical work clearly

The role offers a fast learning curve, close mentorship from experienced engineers, and meaningful ownership of real customer-facing technical problems. It’s also structured for growth, with a clear path from junior engineer to more senior technical roles as you build depth in robotics systems and applied AI.
