Automotive Performance Shop information

What is an automotive performance shop?

An automotive performance shop is a specialized garage or facility that focuses on modifying and enhancing vehicles to improve their speed, power, handling, and overall performance. These shops offer a range of services such as engine tuning, suspension upgrades, exhaust system installations, and custom modifications. Customers often bring their cars to performance shops to achieve better results for racing, show, or personal driving preferences. Technicians in these shops have expertise in high-performance parts and the latest automotive technologies. Whether you want more horsepower or a customized look, performance shops cater to enthusiasts looking to get the most out of their vehicles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an automotive performance shop, and why are they important?

To excel in an Automotive Performance Shop, you need strong mechanical aptitude, diagnostic skills, and a background in automotive technology—often supported by ASE certification or formal training. Familiarity with performance tuning software, diagnostic scanners, and specialized tools is essential for upgrading and troubleshooting high-performance vehicles. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective customer communication are critical soft skills in this environment. These competencies ensure precise, safe modifications and foster customer trust in a competitive automotive market.

What are some common challenges faced by technicians working in an automotive performance shop, and how can they be addressed?

Technicians in an automotive performance shop often encounter challenges such as diagnosing complex issues in high-performance vehicles and staying current with rapidly evolving automotive technologies. These roles can also involve working under tight deadlines, especially when preparing vehicles for races or customer events. To address these challenges, strong diagnostic skills, ongoing training, and effective teamwork are essential. Open communication within the team and a willingness to continually learn help ensure technicians deliver top-quality results while maintaining safety and efficiency.

Automotive Technician – Performance, Off-Road & Jeep

Macklin Automotive: Performance & Off-Road

Indianapolis, IN

Full-Time | Monday–Friday | No Weekends

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:45 AM–5:15 PM | 40 hour work-week

If you’re an experienced automotive technician looking for more than the same routine repairs every day, we’d like to meet you.

Macklin Automotive is a family-owned, veteran-owned independent repair shop specializing in general automotive repair, diagnostics, performance, off-road, suspension and Jeep builds.

We have a high volume of Jeeps and modified vehicles in the shop, and the specialty work is already here. You’ll use your general repair and diagnostic skills while also working on lift kits, steering and suspension upgrades, performance modifications, off-road accessories and builds.

What You’ll Work On:

  • Automotive diagnostics and drivability concerns
  • Electrical diagnostics
  • Brakes, steering, suspension and general repair
  • Jeep repair, diagnostics and upgrades
  • Lift kits and leveling kits
  • Aftermarket steering and suspension
  • Performance and off-road upgrades
  • Routine maintenance and vehicle inspections

We use modern scan tools and digital vehicle inspections with photo and video documentation. Our focus is on accurate diagnostics and quality repairs done right the first time.

What We’re Looking For:

We’re looking for an experienced A/B-level automotive technician or mechanic who is motivated, dependable and comfortable working independently while still being part of a team.

  • 2+ years of professional automotive repair experience
  • Strong mechanical and diagnostic skills
  • Experience with brakes, steering and suspension
  • Ability to diagnose drivability concerns and use modern scan tools
  • Electrical diagnostic experience is a plus
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in your work
  • Good communication and a positive attitude
  • Valid driver’s license

Jeep, off-road, performance, aftermarket or modified vehicle experience is a major plus. ASE certifications are welcomed but not required when experience supports your skill level.

Why Macklin Automotive?

  • Monday–Friday, 8:45 AM–5:15 PM
  • No weekends
  • Consistent 40-hour workweek
  • Regular Jeep, performance and off-road projects
  • No corporate upsell quotas
  • Modern equipment and digital shop processes
  • Input into the type of work you take on
  • Family-owned and veteran-owned
  • Small team where your experience and input are valued

We want our technicians to have some ownership over their work. Tell us what you’re good at, what you enjoy working on and where you’d like to grow.

We’re not trying to build a performance and off-road shop someday: the work, customers and projects are already here. We’re looking for the right technician to join the team doing it.

If you’re ready to use your skills, work on some genuinely cool vehicles and be part of a team that takes pride in what we do, apply today. We’d like to meet you.

Experience:

  • Automotive repair: 2 years (Required)
