Job description

Summary/Objective
The Mechanic’s Helper supports the Primary Mechanic in maintaining and repairing the company’s fleet of commercial vans and trucks. This position plays a key role in ensuring that all vehicles are serviced, inspected, and maintained in safe and reliable working condition. The Mechanic’s Helper assists with preventive maintenance, minor repairs, and major mechanical projects under supervision, while also performing regular inspections and maintaining accurate service schedules.

In addition to hands-on mechanical work, the Mechanic’s Helper is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the shop area, managing inventory of tools and replacement parts, and ensuring all equipment is in proper working order. This role requires strong attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to work both collaboratively within a team environment and independently to support efficient fleet operations and minimize vehicle downtime.

Essential Functions

  1. Performs regularly scheduled preventive maintenance on commercial vans and trucks in accordance with established standards and manufacturer recommendations.
  2. Completes minor automotive repairs as directed by the Primary Mechanic to ensure vehicles remain in safe and reliable operating condition.
  3. Develops, implements, and maintains the schedule for routine servicing of all delivery vehicles.
  4. Executes routine servicing and inspection activities to ensure optimal vehicle performance and compliance with safety requirements.
  1. Conducts daily pre-operation and post-operation inspections of delivery vehicles to identify and report any maintenance or safety concerns.
  2. Assists the Primary Mechanic with major automotive repair projects and diagnostic procedures as assigned.
  3. Maintains cleanliness and organization of the mechanic’s work area through weekly cleaning and general upkeep.
  4. Test drives vehicles following repairs or maintenance to confirm that all work has been performed correctly and to operational standards.
  5. Cleans the shop environment and ensures that all tools and equipment are properly stored and accounted for.
  6. Monitors, tracks, and maintains inventory levels of replacement parts, tools, and related equipment to support efficient maintenance operations.
  7. Inspects tools and equipment on a regular basis to verify safe and proper working condition, reporting any deficiencies promptly.
  8. Performs other related duties as assigned to support departmental operations and organizational objectives.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Must possess a valid Chauffeur’s License
  2. Must have a valid Health Certificate.
  3. Must have a valid DOT Medical Certification.
  4. Excellent organizational and time management skills
  5. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  6. Ability to remain alert and focused while driving a large vehicle and keeping all company assets, fellow commuters, pedestrians, and yourself safe.
  7. Ability to effectively communicate.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work includes movement around vehicles, exposure to an outdoor environment, including inclement weather conditions (heat, humidity, rain, etc.). May be exposed to loud noise, vibration, exhaust fumes, and other conditions.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit or stand for long periods of time, move around the facility from one location to another, talk, hear, use fingers to type, handle or feel and reach objects and lift and/or move objects 10 pounds or less.  The employee may occasionally need to kneel, crawl, stoop, bend and lift and/or move items 40 pounds or more.  Specific vision ability required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust and focus.

Position Type
This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Standard days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm, Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and will be given a regular day off.

Required Education and Experience

  1. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  2. Two years’ experience as a truck driver.

Travel
Local travel to various worksites may be required.
