What is automation and what does an automation professional do?

Automation refers to the use of technology to perform tasks with minimal human intervention. Automation professionals design, develop, and maintain systems that automate processes in various industries, such as manufacturing, IT, and business operations. Their work often involves programming, configuring control systems, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring systems operate efficiently and safely. The goal is to improve productivity, reduce errors, and lower operational costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an automation engineer role?

To thrive as an Automation Engineer, you need a strong foundation in programming, process control, and systems integration, often supported by a degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with automation tools like PLCs, SCADA systems, and scripting languages, as well as certifications such as ISA or Siemens, is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and troubleshooting complex systems. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing efficient automated processes, minimizing errors, and ensuring operational reliability.

What is the job outlook for careers in the automation industry?

Automation is a fast-growing field, and demand for people with advanced qualifications is high. Jobs in automation primarily fall into three categories: designing and building automated machines, maintaining these machines, and programming automation software. Many jobs in this field require a significant amount of industrial engineering or robotics experience. Fulfilling job responsibilities in this industry often requires engineering, math, and communication skills as well as familiarity with programming. Someone in this field may also need to be familiar with electrical systems, delivery pipelines, configuration management tools, networking, or databases to get a job in this industry.

Job description

We're looking for someone with a genuine passion for processes, workflows, and continuous improvement, someone who gets excited about making things run smoother and faster. This is a brand-new role, created because technology is moving quicker than our teams can always keep up with. We see a huge opportunity to use automation and AI to free up our employees for bigger-picture work, and to give our customers faster, better service.

You'll be the only person in this role, working across every department to learn how our systems work, find pain points, and build smart solutions using automation and AI.

What You'll Do
  • Learn our software and systems inside and out: how they work, and how they should connect
  • Proactively find and pitch improvements, without waiting to be asked
  • Propose, build, document, and launch automation and integration projects using no-code/low-code automation platforms and AI tools
  • Train employees on best practices and create simple, clear training materials
  • Meet regularly with every department to uncover pain points worth solving
  • Translate technical ideas into plain language for non-technical teammates
  • Take on fast-paced projects
  • Handle basic tech troubleshooting and hands-on physical tasks: installing computers, printers, cabling, speakers, and similar equipment, which may involve crawling, lifting, bending, or working in tight spaces

What We're Looking For
  • A genuine passion and experience for improving processes and workflows, continuous improvement, and people
  • Experience in AI and automation tools
  • A "figure-it-out" mindset: you teach yourself new tools and systems quickly
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the confidence to work independently
  • Excellent communication skills: you can explain technical ideas simply
  • Project management skills, including the ability to evaluate and prioritize projects based on potential return or impact
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Comfort moving fast and managing several short projects at once

Industry or related experience is a plus, but not required. We care more about how you think and solve problems than a specific background.

Where This Role Is Headed

In the first 1-2 years, this role is focused on learning our systems, building automations, and rolling out integrations. As those systems mature, the role will evolve to include ongoing management of key tools and integrations, evaluating how well systems are performing, deciding when to reinvest or pivot to new tools, staying current on new product releases, and continuing to train and support employees. This is a role that grows with the systems it builds.

Physical Requirements

This role involves regular hands-on equipment setup and troubleshooting, as well as extended periods of desk work. Candidates should be comfortable with tasks that may require lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, crawling, and working in tight or awkward spaces, as well as the ability to sit for long periods and use a computer for extended periods.

Example Projects You Might Take On
  • Redesigning how we update and manage retail pricing in our point-of-sale system
  • Building a tool that lets managers and employees easily get answers to company policy questions

Work Schedule

This is a fully in-office position in Portland, Oregon. Full-time, Monday through Friday. Evening and weekend work may occasionally be required.

How to Apply

To be considered for this position, you must:

  • Submit a resume
  • Fill out every section of the job application
  • Respond to any follow-up text or email you receive asking for more information

Applications that are missing a resume, left incomplete, or don't respond to follow-up requests will not be considered.

Wage Compensation & Benefits
  • $75,000–$95,000, depending on experience
  • Paid time off
  • Comprehensive and affordable health insurance: medical, dental, vision, mental health, and alternative medicine
  • 401k with generous company match
  • Employee discount
  • Partner discounts and employee store passes at local businesses
  • Opportunities for professional growth and advancement within the company
