CONTROLS & AUTOMATION ENGINEER
HAMMOND, IN

As a member of the Engineering Team, the Controls & Automation Engineer is responsible maintaining automated systems and processes to improve efficiency, quality, and safety in Lear manufacturing/production plants. This role involves working closely with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot issues and ensure optimal performance of all automated equipment. The candidate will use their vast knowledge, experience, and resourcefulness to help maintain automation equipment of various types across Lear manufacturing plants.
The Role:
  • Provides support of manufacturing operations to both shifts.
  • Fanuc and UR robotic experience of integration, programming, troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance
  • Managing small projects / workloads involving Fanuc and UR integrations, safety upgrades on existing equipment, and retrofits.
  • Great electrical/mechanical troubleshooting abilities
  • Proficient in the Fanuc robotics systems (additional robotics experience in other brands is a plus)
  • Knowledgeable in Allen Bradley PLC: Micro Logix, Compact Logix, Control Logix with RS Logix 500, 5000, Studio 5000 software
  • Knowledgeable in reading and following electrical prints to diagnose and troubleshoot down equipment.
  • Analyzes information and evaluates results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  • Creates panel designs and layouts, bill of materials, and wiring schematics.
  • Manages projects of various scopes and sizes to design, install, and modify plant equipment, processes, and facilities.
  • Defines instrument, controls requirements, and establishes control system design criteria based on engineering analysis and evaluation.
  • Provides electrical design of automation and control systems from field devices to Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) platforms.
  • Ensures all designs conform to all applicable codes and regulations such as OSHA, NEC, NFPA, and GMP.
  • Participates in development, testing, and implementation of PLC/SCADA application software for manufacturing processes, equipment, and systems.

Your Qualifications:
  • Proficient in (RS Logix 500, RS Logix 5000, Factory Talk HMI, Balluff I/O link, programming).
  • Robotics Programming - Fanuc Programming preferred.
  • Vision- experience with robot guided vision systems - Fanuc 3DV vision system.
  • Basic experience with Vision systems to guide robot - offsets.
  • Understand and communicate applicable safety standards: general industry (OSHA 1910), machine guarding, robot safety (ANSI/RIA 15.06), automated vehicles, conveyor safety.
  • Auto CAD Experience
  • Ignition or other SCADA software
  • Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV/AMR) experience
  • Communication with external manufacturing system /MES
  • Atlas Copco Tools Talk programming and interface with torque tools
  • Develop & Completion of Automation risk assessments.
  • Knowledgeable in MS-Office

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation, or related field.
  • 5+ years in automation engineering or industrial controls.
  • Firsthand experience with PLC programming (Allen-Bradley), robotics, and SCADA systems.
  • Proficiency in programming languages (Ladder Logic, Structured Text, etc.).
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be willing to work extended hours or varying shifts to include weekends and holidays.
  • Must be willing to be on call to immediately respond to problems that arise with equipment and processes.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of regulatory codes and standards such as GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices), OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act), and NEC (National Electric Code), and NFPA (National Fire Protection Act).
  • Knowledge of Distribution Control System (DCS) Programming.
  • Knowledge of Electrical Engineering to understand system interactions, sizing of equipment, and fuses.
  • Knowledge of HMI/SCADA Configuration as needed to complete required tasks and assignments.
  • Knowledge of Project Management
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Access required.
  • Knowledge of Visual Basic required.
  • Skill in using hands (i.e., screwdriver, hammer, etc.) and power tools (i.e., drill press, band saw).
