Job description

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor and assigned trainers, the Maintenance and Automation Trainee supports maintenance, automation, and production teams while developing the skills needed to progress into a Maintenance and Automation Technician role. The trainee learns to safely perform preventive maintenance, basic troubleshooting, equipment checks, changeover support, documentation, and corrective actions on injection molding presses, robots, end-of-arm tooling, automation cells, auxiliary processing equipment, and related systems. Work is performed with coaching, documented training, and appropriate supervision. The trainee is expected to follow all safety, quality, EHS, lockout/tagout, work instruction, and documentation requirements, and to escalate issues that exceed current training or authorization. This will be achieved while maintaining HellermannTyton Quality and EHS certifications by supporting all corporate policies, procedures, work instructions, and required documentation.

Essential Functions

  • Learn and perform preventive maintenance tasks on presses, robots, automation equipment, auxiliary equipment, and related systems under supervision.
  • Assist technicians with investigating equipment faults, alarms, quality-related equipment concerns, and basic mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical issues.
  • Support job changeovers by preparing tools, verifying set-up items, assisting with robot and EOAT adjustments, and confirming equipment is safe and ready for operation.
  • Learn basic troubleshooting methods for sensors, grippers, runners, part confirmation, robot positions, timing, and common automation faults.
  • Assist with vision system cleaning, basic checks, lighting verification, and part confirmation activities as directed by a qualified trainer or technician.
  • Perform basic inspections, cleaning, lubrication, filter checks, hose checks, belt checks, and other routine PM activities as assigned.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, meters, and diagnostic equipment only after training and authorization.
  • Assist with repairs or replacement of components such as sensors, fittings, hoses, guards, fasteners, fuses, cables, and other approved items under direction.
  • Document maintenance activity, training progress, work order updates, parts used, and shift-to-shift communication accurately and promptly.
  • Escalate unsafe conditions, repeated faults, equipment damage, quality concerns, and issues outside current skill level or authorization. 

Other Functions

  • Maintain housekeeping and 5S standards in maintenance areas, tool storage, work areas, and around equipment.
  • Participate in safety talks, training sessions, job shadowing, hands-on demonstrations, and competency sign-offs. 
  • Follow lockout/tagout requirements and never bypass safety devices or perform work outside authorization. 
  • Communicate respectfully and professionally with Maintenance, Process Engineering, Quality, Production, and leadership.
  • Support continuous improvement by reporting recurring issues and suggesting practical improvement ideas through the proper channels.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the apprentice’s training level and safety authorization.

  • Documentation: Updates work orders, training logs, checklists, and shift notes clearly and accurately. 
  • Teamwork and Communication: Works well with trainers, technicians, production, quality, and process engineering.
  • Reliability and Ownership: Shows consistent attendance, preparation, follow-through, and respect for tools and equipment.
  • Attention to Detail: Performs checks carefully and verifies work before returning equipment or information to others.
  • Continuous Improvement Mindset: Looks for repeat issues, waste, safety concerns, and improvement opportunities. 

What You'll Bring 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical diploma, associate degree, apprenticeship coursework, or related training in industrial maintenance, automation, mechatronics, robotics, machining, electrical, or mechanical systems preferred.
  • Prior industrial maintenance experience is not required, but hands-on mechanical, electrical, fabrication, robotics, automation, manufacturing, automotive, military, or technical school experience is helpful.
  • Basic computer skills required; willingness to learn CMMS/work order systems, PLC/HMI interfaces, vision-system interfaces, and Microsoft 365 tools.
  • Ability to read and follow work instructions, safety procedures, PM checklists, equipment manuals, diagrams, and training materials.
  • Ability to lift up to 70 lbs. when required, climb, bend, kneel, work in tight spaces, and perform hands-on maintenance activities safely.
  • Must complete required safety training and only perform tasks for which the trainee has been trained and authorized.
  • Preferred exposure or future training areas include robotics, PLC basics, vision systems, injection molding equipment, RJG concepts, electrical troubleshooting, pneumatics, hydraulics, and mechanical systems.
