Job description

Our client located in Newmarket, Ontario is currently seeking an Automation Technician.

SHIFT: PLEASE SPECIFY WHAT SHIFT YOU PREFER WHEN APPLYING. Days, Afternoons and Nights
Pay: $33.00 per hour. Depending on experience.

Scope of Position:

  • Automation Technician will play a key role in ensuring the reliable performance of manufacturing equipment, with a focus on PLC-controlled systems, vision inspection equipment, barcoding integration, electromechanical presses, and CNC machining centers. This position is responsible for the diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and continuous improvement of automated systems and computer-controlled machinery.
  • The role directly supports production efficiency, product quality, and equipment uptime in a fast-paced, technology-driven manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to perform mechanical repairs where required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of PLC-controlled systems, vision inspection equipment, barcoding systems, CNC machining centers, and electromechanical presses.
  • Conduct root cause analysis of electrical, mechanical, and automation issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain and update PLC programs, vision system configurations, HMI interfaces, and all related documentation, including program backups and mechanical modifications.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on all plant equipment and facility systems to minimize downtime and maintain production efficiency.
  • Monitor equipment performance and quality standards; make recommendations to improve reliability and reduce operating costs.
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of spare parts; notify the Maintenance Manager of any low stock levels.
  • Document daily work orders and activities in the Maintenance Management Software.
  • Provide technical guidance and hands-on training to junior technicians and apprentices.
  • Support the implementation, integration, and commissioning of new automation technologies.
  • Participate in Kaizen and GEAR activities contribute to downtime reduction and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with company safety rules and policies, as well as OHSA, ISO 14001, and IATF 16949 standards.
  • Prepare reports and logs on issues encountered and maintenance activities performed during the shift.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment and follow all applicable standard operating procedures.
  • Assist in developing safety and operational procedures and recommend efficiency improvements in manufacturing, repair, and installation.
  • Participate in ongoing training to stay current with evolving technologies and compliance requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the General Manager and/or Maintenance Manager.

Key Relationships:

  • Maintenance Manager: Provides direct supervision, assigns jobs, and provides guidance and advice on all aspect of the job. Automation Technicians will provide the Maintenance Manager with full information and all necessary reports.
  • Engineering: Automation Technician will assist the Engineering department in the implementation of new technologies, designs, or improvements to equipment.
  • Production Department: Automation Technicians will be in continual contact with machine operators and supervisors to help solve problems and concerns.
  • Quality Assurance Department: Automation Technicians will be in continual contact with the quality department to aid in solving quality concerns related to equipment.
  • Maintenance Department: Automation Technicians assist maintenance personnel in solving problems with Assembly and fixtures.

Basic Requirements:

  • Completion of post-secondary education in Electromechanical Engineering, Industrial Automation, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in a manufacturing or automotive environment with:
  • PLC programming (Allen Bradley, Siemens, or similar)
  • Vision systems (Cognex, Keyence, or similar)
  • Barcoding systems integration
  • Electromechanical presses and automation cells
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with pneumatic and hydraulic systems and tools.
  • Experience with mechanical systems.
  • Good knowledge of manufacturing equipment and processes.
  • Good knowledge of basic electrical systems.
  • 442A – Industrial Electrician as an asset
