What is automation in finance?

Automation in finance refers to the use of technology, such as software, artificial intelligence, and robotics, to perform financial processes and tasks with minimal human intervention. Common applications include automating data entry, invoice processing, reconciliations, financial reporting, and even some decision-making functions. This helps organizations improve efficiency, reduce errors, lower operational costs, and enable finance professionals to focus on more strategic activities. Automation is increasingly being adopted in both large corporations and small businesses to streamline their financial operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in automation in finance?

To thrive in Automation in Finance, you need a solid grounding in finance principles, data analysis, and programming skills, often supported by degrees in finance, accounting, or computer science. Familiarity with automation tools like RPA (Robotic Process Automation), Python, Excel macros, and ERP systems is typically required, along with certifications such as UiPath or Blue Prism. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are key soft skills that help professionals adapt and collaborate across departments. These skills and qualities are crucial for streamlining processes, reducing errors, and driving efficiency in financial operations.

How does an automation in finance specialist typically collaborate with other departments to implement new financial technologies?

An Automation in Finance specialist works closely with teams such as IT, accounting, and operations to identify manual processes that can be automated. Collaboration often involves gathering requirements, mapping current workflows, and testing new solutions to ensure seamless integration across platforms. Regular meetings and cross-functional project teams are common, enabling specialists to address concerns, provide training, and ensure compliance. This collaborative approach helps drive successful adoption of automation tools and optimizes financial processes organization-wide.

Are automation in finance jobs being automated?

Automation in finance jobs, including roles like financial analysts and accountants, is increasingly common as technologies such as robotic process automation (RPA) and artificial intelligence (AI) handle repetitive tasks. While automation reduces manual work, many finance professionals focus on strategic decision-making, analysis, and oversight that require human judgment. Therefore, automation is transforming rather than fully replacing finance jobs, emphasizing the need for skills in technology and data analysis.

We leverage Deloitte's comprehensive capabilities, assets, and insights to deliver innovative, market-driven solutions. Our mission is to help clients modernize end-to-end Finance functions, including Invoice to Pay, Invoice to Cash, and Record to Report. We help organizations improve financial and operational performance, manage risk, drive organizational change, and position Finance as a strategic business partner. As Finance organizations become the enterprise's nerve center for AI-enabled decision-making, resilience, and growth, we help clients modernize operations through ERP enablement, intelligent automation, generative AI, and agentic AI.

We are seeking a motivated and analytical Senior Consultant to join our Operational Finance Transformation team. The ideal candidate will have a foundational understanding of Finance Operations-including Invoice to Pay, Invoice to Cash, and Record to Report-as well as related operating models, technologies, solutions, AI use cases, and performance measures.

This individual will bring foundational experience integrating technology and process design, supporting complex change management initiatives, and understanding how intelligent automation and agentic AI are reshaping Finance service delivery. In this role, you will support strategic transformation programs, design governance structures, implement new capabilities globally, and optimize Finance processes-including helping define effective human-AI operating models.

Work you'll do

As a GBS Senior Consultant on the Operational Finance Transformation team, you will support business transformation initiatives that improve Finance operations, service delivery, enterprise value, and organizational agility. You will:

  • Support project delivery by preparing materials for meetings, workshops, and presentations, and tracking issues, risks, decisions, dependencies, and status.
  • Analyze Finance processes and operating models across Invoice to Pay, Invoice to Cash, and Record to Report to identify improvement opportunities and support future-state design.
  • Help design hybrid human-AI operating models by assessing where work should be performed by people, automation, or AI agents, including appropriate oversight, escalation, and exception handling.
  • Evaluate and apply ERP, workflow, intelligent automation, predictive analytics, generative AI, and agentic AI capabilities to improve Finance service delivery.
  • Support the transition of AI and automation use cases from pilots into embedded, scalable Finance capabilities.
  • Develop analyses, financial models, business cases, AI opportunity assessments, maturity roadmaps, storyboards, and presentation materials to support strategic recommendations and client decision-making.
  • Collaborate with client stakeholders, Deloitte teams, and technology teams to translate business requirements into effective process, governance, data, and technology solutions.
  • Support AI governance, responsible AI, change management, stakeholder engagement, workforce reskilling, and adoption activities.
  • Contribute to team collaboration, practice development, proposals, and pursuit efforts, including mentoring junior practitioners.

A successful candidate would possess these skills

  • Ability to work independently and collaborate as part of a team.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and quality of work product.
  • Ability to build and sustain professional relationships.
  • Ability to lead projects or workstreams.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and provide clear guidance to others.
  • Curiosity about emerging technologies and their practical application to Finance Operations.
  • Ability to translate complex business, process, and technology concepts into actionable recommendations.

The team

As Finance cycles converge, our GBS Operational Finance Transformation team advises, implements, and operates best-in-class solutions that accelerate insight and transform Finance organizations from functional service providers into dynamic, strategic capabilities.

We deliver resilient, agile, and cost-effective outcomes that advance the CFO, CAO, and other executive stakeholders' agendas. Our solutions support ERP-enabled and AI-enabled transformation through the functional design, implementation, and governance of Finance processes, controls, policies, operating models, and human-AI workflows.

Qualifications

Required

  • Experience developing financial models, analyses, and business cases using Microsoft Excel.
  • Exposure to Finance Operations technologies and platforms, including AI use cases, intelligent automation, robotic process automation, HighRadius, BlackLine, Basware, ERP platforms, Tableau, Power BI, ServiceNow, or Salesforce.
  • Exposure to emerging applications of generative AI, agentic AI, predictive analytics, or AI-enabled workflows within Finance Operations.
  • Ability to travel 50%, on average, based on the work you do and the clients and industries/sectors you serve.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.

Preferred

  • Master of Business Administration or other advanced degree.
  • Experience with Lean or Six Sigma.
  • Certification in a change management methodology, such as Prosci or ADKAR.
  • Experience supporting business process technology vendor selection.
  • Experience developing proposals or responses to requests for proposal.
