Automation In Finance information

Are automation in finance jobs being automated?

Automation in finance jobs, including roles like financial analysts and accountants, is increasingly common as technologies such as robotic process automation (RPA) and artificial intelligence (AI) handle repetitive tasks. While automation streamlines processes, many finance roles still require human judgment, strategic thinking, and oversight, making complete automation unlikely in the near term.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in automation in finance?

To thrive in Automation in Finance, you need a solid grounding in finance principles, data analysis, and programming skills, often supported by degrees in finance, accounting, or computer science. Familiarity with automation tools like RPA (Robotic Process Automation), Python, Excel macros, and ERP systems is typically required, along with certifications such as UiPath or Blue Prism. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are key soft skills that help professionals adapt and collaborate across departments. These skills and qualities are crucial for streamlining processes, reducing errors, and driving efficiency in financial operations.

What is automation in finance?

Automation in finance refers to the use of technology, such as software, artificial intelligence, and robotics, to perform financial processes and tasks with minimal human intervention. Common applications include automating data entry, invoice processing, reconciliations, financial reporting, and even some decision-making functions. This helps organizations improve efficiency, reduce errors, lower operational costs, and enable finance professionals to focus on more strategic activities. Automation is increasingly being adopted in both large corporations and small businesses to streamline their financial operations.

How does an automation in finance specialist typically collaborate with other departments to implement new financial technologies?

An Automation in Finance specialist works closely with teams such as IT, accounting, and operations to identify manual processes that can be automated. Collaboration often involves gathering requirements, mapping current workflows, and testing new solutions to ensure seamless integration across platforms. Regular meetings and cross-functional project teams are common, enabling specialists to address concerns, provide training, and ensure compliance. This collaborative approach helps drive successful adoption of automation tools and optimizes financial processes organization-wide.

Job description

We're Looking for an experienced Director to join our Financial Planning & Analysis team!
About the Company:
Security Benefit is a leader in the U.S. retirement market with more than $60 billion in assets under management. We offer opportunities to thrive, innovate, and make an impact. As part of our team, you'll play a key role in driving the future of the U.S. retirement industry. Security Benefit is a PLACE where we promise to help our customers To and Through Retirement®.
We're proud to have been recognized as one of the best in the business:
  • Named to Ward's 50 list of top-performing life-health insurance companies
  • Recognized on list of Ingram's Top 100 Private Companies in the Kansas City area in 2024

About the Role:
The Director, Financial Planning and Analysis leads management reporting and analysis across GAAP and Statutory (STAT) results, serving as the senior subject matter expert on the company's financial performance and results drivers. This role owns the production, analysis, and communication of financial results used by senior leadership, the Board, and external stakeholders, and partners closely with Financial Reporting, Actuarial, Investments, Treasury, and Investor Relations to explain complex transactions and results, respond to ad hoc requests, and translate financial outcomes into clear, decision-ready insights.
The Director, FP&A position reports to the Vice President, FP&A and can be based out of our home office in Topeka, Kansas, our Overland Park, KS or Des Moines, IA locations. We work a hybrid schedule, offering flexibility to work both remotely and on-site.
  • Own and lead management reporting and analysis for GAAP and STAT results, including quarterly and annual variance analysis and results commentary.
  • Lead the preparation of executive-ready materials explaining financial results, key drivers, and trends across GAAP and STAT bases for senior management and the Board.
  • Serve as a key partner to Investor Relations in developing earnings materials and investor day content and providing responses to ad hoc investor and analyst requests.
  • Drive analysis of complex or non-recurring transactions, translating technical accounting and actuarial outcomes into clear narratives for senior management.
  • Partner with Financial Reporting, Actuarial, Investments, and Treasury to understand and explain GAAP-to-STAT differences and their impact on reported results.
  • Support strategic and business decisions by providing financial analysis across GAAP and STAT frameworks.
  • Lead forward-looking scenario planning and proactively surface strategic and financial implications ahead of leadership requests, rather than primarily explaining historical results.
  • Monitor developments in GAAP and STAT reporting requirements, assessing and communicating potential impacts to the company.
  • Present financial results, drivers, and forward-looking views to senior leadership and relevant management committees on a recurring basis.
  • Proactively engage Actuarial, Investments, and Treasury to help shape cross-functional decisions and priorities, extending influence by reactive explanation of results.
  • Drive continuous improvement of management reporting processes, models, and controls, including documentation, automation, and review procedures.
  • Build and develop the team's talent pipeline, coaching high-performing analysts toward increasing ownership and supervisory responsibility, and structuring the team to support a future Manager/Senior layer as the function scales.

What We're Looking For:
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Actuarial Science, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field; advanced degree (MBA, MS) a plus.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in financial planning and analysis, accounting, or management reporting within insurance or financial services, including experience with both GAAP and STAT reporting.
  • Direct, hands-on experience with management reporting, variance analysis, and results explanation across GAAP and STAT basis.
  • Prior experience supporting Investor Relations, external reporting, or Board-level presentations strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience explaining complex transactions and translating technical results into executive-level narratives.
  • 3+ years of direct people-leadership experience, with demonstrated ability to develop individual contributors into supervisory or management-track roles, preferred.
  • Experience shaping forward-looking financial strategy and scenario planning, with the ability to influence enterprise-level decisions proactively rather than reactively.

Why Choose Security Benefit?
When you join our team, you're not just getting a paycheck - you're getting a career path full of growth opportunities, plus a robust benefits package that puts your well-being first. Here's what you can expect as a full-time Security Benefit associate:
  • Competitive salary and annual incentive bonuses to reward your contributions.
  • 33 days of paid time off (including PTO, holidays, Volunteer Day, and days of significance).
  • Paid parental leave after 90 days of service.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental & vision insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match, plus Profit Sharing & Savings Plan.
  • Short- and Long-Term Disability Insurance to give you peace of mind.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts for medical and dependent care.
  • Life Insurance to protect your loved ones.
  • Educational assistance to support your career development.
  • Associate assistance programs for your personal and professional well-being.
