What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Automation Control Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automation Control Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, control systems, and process automation, often requiring a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Proficiency with PLC programming, SCADA systems, HMI software, and relevant industry certifications such as ISA or Siemens is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams help set top candidates apart. Mastery of these skills ensures reliable system performance, smooth integration of automated solutions, and efficient troubleshooting in complex industrial environments.

How does an Automation Control Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Automation Control Engineers frequently work alongside mechanical, electrical, and software engineers, as well as production and maintenance teams, to design, implement, and optimize automated systems. Effective communication and collaboration are essential, as engineers must integrate control systems with other disciplines and ensure seamless operation within the larger production environment. Regular meetings, design reviews, and troubleshooting sessions are common, enabling the team to address challenges quickly and maintain project timelines. Building strong professional relationships and understanding each team's needs can greatly improve project outcomes.

What is an Automation Control Engineer?

An Automation Control Engineer is a professional responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining systems that control automated processes in industries such as manufacturing, energy, and transportation. They work with technologies like programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), sensors, and robotics to optimize and streamline production or operational workflows. Their work ensures efficiency, safety, and reliability in automated systems. Automation Control Engineers often collaborate with other engineers and technicians to implement and troubleshoot control solutions.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior automation control engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills in PLCs, SCADA systems, and industrial networks, and often working in high-demand industries or management roles can earn $300,000 or more annually. Achieving this salary typically requires advanced certifications, a strong track record, and leadership responsibilities.

What is the difference between Automation Control Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectAutomation Control EngineerElectrical Engineer

Job description

Controls Engineer (Industrial Automation)
Location: West Michigan (on the Kalamazoo River)

Are you passionate about automation, control systems, and solving complex industrial challenges? Our client, a growing systems integrator in West Michigan, is looking for a Controls Engineer to help design and deliver cutting-edge automation solutions for a wide range of industrial processes.

This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer who enjoys working with PLC programming, SCADA systems, and industrial automation technologies while gaining hands-on experience across the full project lifecycleโ€”from system design through commissioning.

If you enjoy variety in your work, collaborating with experienced engineers, and seeing your solutions come to life in real-world industrial environments, this role could be a great fit.

What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Design, develop, and implement automated control systems and software solutions for industrial projects
  • Program and configure PLC and SCADA systems for new and existing automation applications
  • Support projects from design through testing, commissioning, and startup
  • Troubleshoot control systems, instrumentation, and motor control applications
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and project managers to deliver high-quality automation solutions
  • Install and test automation equipment at customer facilities when required
  • Continuously develop expertise in emerging automation technologies and tools

What You Bring

  • Experience with industrial automation systems, including PLCs, SCADA, and electrical control systems
  • Hands-on experience with PLC programming platforms, such as Rockwell Studio 5000 or similar tools
  • Experience developing or supporting SCADA/HMI applications
  • Strong troubleshooting ability with motor controls, instrumentation, and relay logic
  • Understanding of industrial networking and computer systems
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Valid driverโ€™s license and willingness to travel to customer sites as needed

Work Environment

This role combines office-based engineering work with hands-on field experience. Youโ€™ll spend time developing automation solutions in the office and supporting installations or troubleshooting at customer facilities. Project environments may include manufacturing plants, industrial process facilities, and other operational sites.

Why This Opportunity Stands Out

  • Work on diverse automation projects across multiple industries
  • Gain exposure to modern PLC and SCADA technologies
  • Collaborate with experienced engineers in a supportive team environment
  • Clear career growth path from Controls Engineer to Senior Controls Engineer and System Architect
  • Hands-on work that allows you to see your engineering solutions in action

If you're ready to grow your career in industrial automation and control systems engineering, apply today and take the next step with our clientโ€™s innovative engineering team.
