Job Title: Building Automation Field Service Engineer

Job Description

This role focuses on delivering high-quality aftermarket services for building automation and controls systems. As a Building Automation Field Service Engineer, you will commission, optimize, troubleshoot, and support complex HVAC, lighting, and energy management systems across multiple platforms. You will work closely with clients to resolve technical issues, recommend preventative maintenance and additional services, and ensure systems operate reliably and efficiently. This position offers strong opportunities for professional growth while working on a wide variety of projects in critical environments such as hospitals, data centers, and schools.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the commissioning and optimization of advanced building automation systems for HVAC, lighting, and energy management.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical and integration issues across multiple building automation platforms, including WebCTRL®, Niagara, Schneider, and Honeywell systems.
  • Integrate third-party systems using industry-standard protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and LonWorks.
  • Configure and fine-tune controls, trends, alarms, and reports to ensure accurate monitoring and performance.
  • Manage secure network connections for building automation systems, including connectivity, access, and system reliability.
  • Collaborate with clients to diagnose system issues and work side-by-side with their staff to develop effective solutions.
  • Schedule and coordinate system modifications, upgrades, and service activities with internal teams and client stakeholders.
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and technical support to junior technicians and team members.
  • Deliver clear and effective customer training to ensure users understand system operation and capabilities.
  • Ensure systems perform as designed and as promised, validating performance and making necessary adjustments.
  • Recommend additional services, system enhancements, and preventative maintenance options based on client needs and system performance.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of service activities, configurations, and system changes.
  • Communicate technical information in a clear and professional manner to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Essential Skills

  • 3+ years of experience in building automation, HVAC, or a related technical field.
  • Hands-on experience with building automation systems and HVAC controls, including troubleshooting and field service work.
  • Ability to commission, optimize, and support building automation systems for HVAC, lighting, and energy applications.
  • Proficiency with advanced building automation software such as WebCTRL® and related control platforms.
  • Ability to navigate and integrate into a variety of building automation systems, including platforms like Niagara, Schneider, and Honeywell.
  • Strong understanding of industry communication protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and LonWorks.
  • Expertise with TCP/IP networks, including wireless network technologies, as they relate to building automation systems.
  • Ability to configure controls, trends, alarms, and reports, and manage secure network connections for building systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for complex technical and integration issues across multiple platforms.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications.

Work Environment

This role is based in the Twin Cities area, with an office located in St. Paul. You will spend the majority of your time traveling to and working at various client sites across the region. The work environment includes critical facilities such as hospitals, data centers, and schools, where reliability and system performance are essential. Most days will be spent onsite with client staff, collaborating closely to troubleshoot issues, implement solutions, and recommend preventative and value-added services. The position involves a combination of office-based tasks, such as documentation and coordination, and field-based work in mechanical rooms, equipment spaces, and occupied facilities. Regular driving between sites is required, and you will work with modern building automation technologies, networked systems, and standard office productivity tools.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Saint Paul, MN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $55.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
