Job description

ATC Automation is looking for a Welder Apprentice to join our Cookeville, TN location. The Welder Apprentice constructs metal components as specified in layout drawings, diagrams, welding procedures or oral instructions. Additional duties include cutting material, prepping for welding, drilling, tapping, fitting and assembling welded parts into complete assemblies. This is an entry level position with the capability to perform all welding tasks with direct supervision of senior welders.

Reporting to the Business Unit Manager, the Welder Apprentice is assigned welding and associated tasks from senior welders. This position routinely applies knowledge of welding shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, maintainability and strength of materials, and layout techniques. Knowledge of MIG and TIG welding processes are essential to successful performance in this position.

How You'll Contribute

  • Analyze drawings and specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances.
  • Determine material specifications.
  • Cut materials to specifications.
  • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, and accessories.
  • Clean and grind as necessary to prepare for welding.
  • Weld in flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions.
  • Verify conformance of parts to specification using appropriate measuring instruments.
  • Inspect welds for flaws as per specifications.
  • May fit and assemble components.
  • May operate conventional machine tools.
  • May drill and tap by hand.

Physical Demands and Conditions

  • Stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to floor.

  • Exposure to high noise levels, moving/rotating equipment, fumes, dust, oil and other fluids.
  • Exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
