Regular training and familiarity with the AGV's software and safety protocols can help operators minimize downtime and maintain efficient workflows. Staying proactive with routine inspections and promptly reporting irregularities also plays a key role in smooth AGV operations.

What are Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs)?

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are mobile robots used in industrial settings to transport materials or products within a facility without human intervention. They navigate using markers, wires, magnets, lasers, or cameras, following predetermined paths or dynamically mapping their environment. AGVs help improve efficiency, safety, and accuracy in warehouses, factories, and distribution centers by automating repetitive transportation tasks. They are commonly used for moving goods between production lines, storage areas, and shipping docks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AGV Technician, you need a solid background in electronics, mechanical systems, and automation, often supported by a technical diploma or associate degree. You will perform preventive and corrective maintenance, diagnose electrical and mechanical issues, support system upgrades, and ensure that all automated equipment operates safely, reliably, and in compliance with applicable standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance (PM) on automated guided vehicles (AGVs), autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), and associated automation systems to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and mechatronic issues on AGVs, AMRs, and industrial automation equipment, including motors, drives, sensors, and control components.
  • Carry out corrective maintenance on mechanical systems, replacing or repairing faulty components and restoring equipment to proper operating condition.
  • Program, configure, and adjust PLCs (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell and Siemens S7/TIA Portal) and HMI systems to support system operation, optimization, and upgrades.
  • Perform electrical troubleshooting on automation equipment, including PLC-based control systems, motor controls, and variable frequency drives.
  • Conduct mechanical troubleshooting on robotic and automated systems, including pneumatics and other mechanical assemblies.
  • Support system upgrades and modifications to AGVs, AMRs, and related automation, ensuring changes are properly tested, documented, and implemented.
  • Perform quality checks, inspections, and quality assurance and quality control activities to verify proper operation and adherence to standards and procedures.
  • Document maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and test results clearly and accurately for tracking and compliance purposes.
  • Interact with clients and hospital staff in a professional, outgoing manner, explaining technical issues and solutions in clear, understandable terms.
  • Follow applicable chemical handling, food safety, and GMP-related procedures where relevant to the automated systems and environment.
  • Collaborate with other maintenance and technical personnel to resolve complex issues and ensure reliable operation of all automated systems.
  • Remain available for on-call support on weekends to respond to emergency issues affecting automated guided vehicles and related equipment.

Essential Skills

  • Hands-on experience with Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs).
  • Strong electrical troubleshooting skills for industrial automation and control systems.
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills for mechanical and mechatronic systems.
  • Practical experience with robotics maintenance and automation equipment.
  • Ability to perform preventive and corrective maintenance on mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Working knowledge of PLCs, including Allen-Bradley/Rockwell and Siemens S7/TIA Portal platforms.
  • Ability to program and troubleshoot PLCs and work with HMI systems in an industrial environment.
  • Familiarity with motor controls and variable frequency drives.
  • Experience with pneumatics and mechanical systems used in automation and robotics.
  • Ability to perform thorough inspections, quality checks, and quality assurance/quality control tasks.
  • Comfort working in a client-facing role, communicating technical information clearly and professionally.
  • Outgoing personality and strong interpersonal skills for interacting with hospital staff and clients.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in mechatronics, industrial maintenance, or a related technical field.
  • Experience working with robots and robotic automation systems.
  • Familiarity with Allen-Bradley and Siemens PLC programming environments and related software tools.
  • Experience working with test procedures and documentation for automated systems.
  • Understanding of GMPs and quality standards, particularly in environments where food, chemical, or medical handling procedures apply.
