What is an Audio Visual System Administrator?

An Audio Visual (AV) System Administrator is a professional responsible for managing, configuring, and maintaining AV systems and equipment within an organization. This includes handling audio, video, and conferencing technologies, ensuring smooth operation for meetings, events, and presentations. AV System Administrators also troubleshoot technical issues, perform regular maintenance, and may provide user support or training on AV technologies. Their role often bridges the gap between IT and facilities teams, ensuring that all AV systems are secure, up-to-date, and meet organizational needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Audio Visual System Administrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Audio Visual System Administrator, you need a solid understanding of AV technologies, networking, and systems integration, typically supported by a degree in IT or related certifications like CTS. Familiarity with AV control systems (e.g., Crestron, Extron), video conferencing platforms, and network management tools is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you address technical issues and collaborate with users and technical teams. These competencies ensure seamless AV operations, minimize downtime, and deliver high-quality user experiences across organizational environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Audio Visual System Administrators in managing large-scale AV deployments?

Audio Visual System Administrators often encounter challenges such as integrating new AV technology with existing legacy systems, ensuring network security for AV devices, and troubleshooting issues across multiple meeting rooms or event spaces. Managing firmware updates, coordinating with vendors, and maintaining consistent system performance can also be demanding, particularly in organizations with frequent events or rapidly evolving technology needs. Collaboration with IT teams, facility managers, and end-users is essential to ensure smooth operations and proactively address technical concerns.

Job description

As an A/V Engineer at Uber, you will play a pivotal role in architecting, implementing, and supporting advanced A/V systems across our global office footprint. Sitting within the Digital Experience team, you will apply your technical acumen and engineering discipline to design, configure, test, and optimize A/V solutions that meet the evolving needs of a hybrid workforce and high-impact collaboration environments.
This is a hands-on engineering role requiring advanced scripting/configuration skills, architectural design fluency, and the ability to troubleshoot and maintain high-reliability A/V environments. You will work cross-functionally with Product Managers, IT, Workplace, and third-party vendors to ensure seamless A/V system performance, contributing to engineering excellence through robust documentation, mentoring, and operational rigor.
What the Candidate Will Do
01. Design and implement scalable and high-performing A/V solutions in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
02. Write, test, and maintain configuration scripts and automation to deploy and manage A/V systems across Uber offices.
03. Proactively monitor and improve A/V system reliability by building observability (alerts, telemetry, health dashboards) into production systems.
04. Participate in on-call rotations and respond to escalations, leveraging strong troubleshooting practices to minimize downtime.
05. Lead technical design discussions, develop architecture artifacts (e.g., system diagrams, ERDs), and define configuration standards.
06. Review peers' configurations/scripts, provide constructive feedback, and raise the quality bar across the A/V Engineering team.
07. Mentor junior engineers and contribute to internal documentation, onboarding guides, and operational runbooks to scale team knowledge.
08. Partner with Workplace, IT, and Product stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical A/V system designs.
09. Identify technical debt, propose solutions to optimize performance and reduce system complexity.
10. Represent A/V Engineering in internal forums, contribute to cultural and inclusion efforts (e.g., ERGs), and actively participate in the recruiting and interviewing process.
Basic Qualifications
1. Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, A/V Technology, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
2. Proven experience engineering A/V systems in enterprise environments (conference rooms, boardrooms, auditoriums).
3. Proficiency in configuration/scripting (e.g., Crestron, Q-SYS, Extron, Zoom APIs, JSON, Python, JS, or equivalent tools).
4. Deep understanding of A/V control systems, video conferencing technologies, signal flow, audio processing, and A/V-over-IP.
5. Experience building and maintaining A/V monitoring and telemetry platforms (e.g., Zoom Dashboard, Logitech Sync, Crestron XiO Cloud).
6. Strong documentation skills, including runbooks, design wikis, and SOPs.
7. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, especially when working with cross-functional teams and diverse stakeholders.
8. Experience leading system troubleshooting during incidents, with a focus on root cause analysis and long-term mitigation.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Certifications such as CTS, CTS-D, Crestron Programmer, Q-SYS Level 2, or equivalent.
2. Experience with A/V infrastructure in multi-site, global deployments.
3. Familiarity with ticketing and configuration management systems (e.g., Jira, ServiceNow, Git).
4. Ability to manage A/V integrators and contractors during buildouts and retrofits.
5. Experience developing testing frameworks and implementing CI/CD pipelines for A/V system configuration deployments.
6. Passion for mentoring and driving continuous improvement within engineering teams.
7. Familiarity with accessibility standards and designing inclusive A/V experiences.
For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$153,000 per year - USD$170,000 per year.
