Is there a demand for audio systems engineers?

Audio systems engineers are in demand across industries such as entertainment, broadcasting, and telecommunications, with growth driven by advancements in audio technology and increasing demand for high-quality sound systems. Skills in digital signal processing, acoustics, and familiarity with audio software and hardware are highly valued, and employment opportunities are expected to grow steadily in the coming years.

What are some common challenges audio systems engineers face when integrating new audio technologies into existing infrastructures?

Audio Systems Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new audio technologies, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy equipment, managing latency or signal degradation, and maintaining overall system reliability. Balancing client expectations with technical limitations can also be demanding, especially in environments with strict acoustical requirements. Collaboration with IT teams and other engineers is key to troubleshooting and implementing effective solutions that meet both performance and budgetary goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an audio systems engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Audio Systems Engineer, you need a deep understanding of acoustics, signal processing, and electronics, typically supported by a degree in audio engineering or a related field. Familiarity with digital audio workstations (DAWs), audio measurement software, and industry certifications like CTS or Dante are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with clients and technical teams. These skills ensure accurate system design, seamless integration, and optimal sound quality in various environments.

What does an audio systems engineer do?

An Audio Systems Engineer is responsible for designing, installing, and maintaining audio systems in various settings such as studios, live venues, broadcast environments, and commercial spaces. They work with complex audio equipment, ensuring optimal sound quality and system performance. Their tasks often include system configuration, troubleshooting, acoustic analysis, and collaborating with other professionals to meet project requirements. Audio Systems Engineers need a strong understanding of audio technology, acoustics, and signal processing.

What is the difference between Audio Systems Engineer vs Audio Engineer?

AspectAudio Systems EngineerAudio Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in audio engineering, electronics, or related field; certifications like CTS or CEDIASimilar degrees; certifications like CTS are common but not mandatory
Work EnvironmentDesigning, testing, and integrating audio systems in commercial, industrial, or entertainment settingsRecording, mixing, and live sound in studios, concerts, or broadcast environments
Industry UsageUsed in AV integration, system design, and technical consultingUsed in music production, live events, and broadcasting

While both roles involve audio technology, Audio Systems Engineers focus on designing and implementing complex audio systems, whereas Audio Engineers primarily handle recording, mixing, and live sound production. The roles often overlap in skills but differ in scope and work environment.

Job description

Why this role exists
OGS delivers communications infrastructure: integrated systems, environments, and workflows that help teams produce and move content reliably at scale. Reliable delivery depends on someone owning the day-to-day: client SLAs, internal IT, installation assistance and quality control during on-site work. Today that work is split across senior staff, which pulls them off design and client engagement. The Systems Engineer takes that operational layer and grows into broader systems design and execution work over time.
This is a hybrid role with deliberate growth runway. You'll start grounded in support and infrastructure ownership, and progressively take on more responsibility in systems design, on-site execution, and project delivery.
Outcomes
  • Active client SLAs are met: issues triaged, resolved, escalated cleanly, and documented
  • Smaller systems design projects are delivered independently, on spec, and to OGS standards
  • Systems installed meet OGS standards on first delivery, not after rework
  • Routine support and infrastructure work no longer pulls senior technical staff off design and client engagement
  • System and network diagrams, and asset records stay current as the business changes
  • OGS internal IT systems are reliable, well-documented, and progressively improved
Responsibilities
  • Own day-to-day support for active client SLAs: first response, triage, troubleshoot, resolve, escalate, document, and follow up
  • Lead systems design independently on smaller projects from day one; contribute to larger designs alongside senior staff and grow into leading them over time
  • Execute installations at OGS offices and on client sites, for both client projects and internal work: unboxing, QA, inventory, labeling, rack building, cable management, commissioning,
  • Maintain technical documentation: network diagrams, tech books, asset and configuration records
  • Take ownership of OGS internal IT infrastructure and systems: networks, firewalls, servers
  • Grow into broader project execution and design leadership as capability and trust expand
Requirements
Must Have
  • Documented experience with two or more of: Disguise, Pixera, Unreal Engine, LightAct, Megapixel, Brompton, or a comparable real-time media or video playback platform
  • Experience working with other production technologies such as video routing, KVM systems, cameras, audio systems, etc.
  • Strong enterprise networking: VLAN design, routing, multicast basics, firewall administration, endpoint management, identity and access basics
  • Comfort working under SLA pressure, with the judgment to know when to solve versus escalate
  • Strong written communication for design docs, tickets, and post-incident reports
Preferred
  • Exposure to SMPTE 2110, NMOS, NDI, SDVoE, or other broadcast IP standards
  • Prior on-site work with AV integrators, broadcast environments, or virtual production stages
  • Basic scripting or automation (Python, Bash, PowerShell) skills
  • Familiarity with LED volumes, camera tracking, or related virtual production infrastructure
  • Comfortable with ticketing, asset tracking, and documentation tools

The OGS Way
We are Entrepreneurial. Courageous. Innovative. Collaborative. We Believe in Each Other.
Reality first. Systems over heroics. Decision-grade communication. High standards, low drama. Finish the job.
