Position Summary
The District Attorney's Office is recruiting to fill two full-time Assistant District Attorney (ADA) positions in the District Attorney's office for Monroe County, located in Sparta, Wisconsin. These are State positions in the unclassified service. Options for partial remote work are available.
MONROE COUNTY BACKGROUND
Monroe County is ideally located along Interstates 90 and 94. This ideal location is within 30 to 45 minutes of La Crosse and has Madison and Rochester, Minnesota, within an hour and a half. Minneapolis and Milwaukee within two and a half hours and Chicago within 4 hours.
Monroe County is also ideal for rural living. The County has approximately 46,000 people but has several thriving rural communities. Highlights of Monroe County include, 450 miles of trout streams, the nation's first rails-to trails bike trail, world class road cycling opportunities, extensive snowmobile trails and many other exciting opportunities for outdoor activities.
Tomah and Sparta are Monroe County's largest municipalities and offer a combination of rural charm, excellent local eateries and historic downtowns. This includes, Sparta's Matsumoto Ramen House, which is the #8 Ramen restaurant in the United States, according to yelp.com. Monroe County is also home to the largest Amish settlement in Wisconsin, near Cashton, which offers unique exposure to a different community, Amish baking, and large greenhouses to purchase flowers and plants. With all of this to offer, Monroe County is an ideal place to live, raise a family, explore nature, and thrive.
LOCAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM BACKGROUND
The Monroe County District Attorney's Office currently is allotted 5.5 Assistant District Attorney positions. The District Attorney and Chief Assistant District Attorney have combined over 25 years of District Attorney Office management experience. Overall, the attorneys in the office have more than 50 years of prosecutorial experience. The office also boasts extremely competent, friendly and hard working support staff. Attorneys and staff in the office routinely receive statewide recognition for the quality of their work. This creates an ideal environment for both new and experienced attorneys to thrive and grow in their profession.
The Monroe County Court system includes 3 judges, all of whom have extensive experience on the bench, who preside over all judicial affairs including two diversion courts (Drug Court and OWI Court).
The Office structure is designed to offer both entry level and advanced prosecution positions including Criminal Traffic and OWI, Sexual Assault/Child Abuse/Domestic Violence, Drug Delivery/Criminal Organizations and General Prosecution. Management strives to assign caseloads that fit each attorney's strengths and that each attorney finds to be enjoyable/challenging.
Salary Information
The starting salary for the position will be $78,686 annually ($37.83 per hour).
Job Details
Attorneys who are currently employed by the State of Wisconsin are invited to apply and may be able to transfer at their current pay rate. Attorneys who have left the position of Wisconsin elected District Attorney or Assistant District Attorney within the last five years may be able to be hired at a wage rate above the minimum.
Qualifications
Only attorneys who have been admitted to practice law in the State of Wisconsin may be hired. Students anticipating graduation or bar admission prior to September 01, 2026 are also encouraged to apply.
