At Home Proofreader information

What is an at home proofreader?

At Home Proofreaders are professionals who review and correct written content for errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting from their own homes. They work on a variety of documents, such as articles, books, academic papers, and business materials. These proofreaders use their keen attention to detail and strong language skills to ensure that texts are clear, accurate, and polished before publication or submission. Working remotely offers flexibility, and most At Home Proofreaders communicate with clients through email or online platforms.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an at home proofreader?

To thrive as an At Home Proofreader, you need exceptional attention to detail, a strong grasp of grammar and spelling, and often a degree in English or a related field. Familiarity with style guides (such as APA, MLA, or Chicago), word processing software, and proofreading tools like Grammarly or Track Changes in Microsoft Word is typically expected. Strong time management, self-motivation, and effective written communication are standout soft skills in this remote role. These skills and qualities ensure high-quality, error-free documents and reliable, independent work from a home office.

What are common challenges faced by at home proofreaders, and how can they be managed?

At-home proofreaders often encounter challenges such as managing distractions in a home environment and maintaining consistent focus during long editing sessions. To address these, it’s helpful to establish a dedicated workspace, set clear work hours, and take regular breaks to avoid fatigue. Additionally, at-home proofreaders may need to communicate frequently with clients or team members remotely, so strong organizational and time management skills are essential. Leveraging digital tools for project tracking and staying up to date with style guides can further enhance accuracy and efficiency.

Both roles are remote and require strong language skills, but editors typically have broader responsibilities and credentials.

Summary
The Senior Proofreader is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, consistency and quality of digital and print copy across J.Crew Factory's promotional and brand marketing channels. This role reviews and approves marketing assets for grammar, spelling, style, punctuation, brand voice, promotional accuracy, legal compliance and visual consistency.
Working closely with Creative, Copy, Brand Operations, Marketing, E-commerce, Merchandising and Legal teams, the Senior Proofreader will ensure that all messaging is clear and error-free across digital, print and in-store touchpoints.
Responsibilities
  • Proofread and quality-check promotional and brand-marketing materials across email, website, paid media, social media, SMS, direct mail, store signage, packaging and other customer-facing channels.

  • Verify the accuracy of promotional offers, pricing, product names and details, discount language, exclusions, dates, legal disclaimers and call-to-action messaging.

  • Ensure adherence to J.Crew Factory's brand voice, editorial standards and style guidelines.

  • Identify and correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, formatting and typographical errors.

  • Review and validate legal and compliance language in partnership with Legal and Marketing teams.

  • Manage multiple concurrent projects while maintaining exceptional attention to detail in a fast-paced retail environment.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing or a related field.

  • 5+ years of proofreading, copyediting or editorial experience, preferably in retail, fashion, e-commerce or consumer marketing.

  • Exceptional command of English grammar, punctuation, syntax and usage.

  • Experience proofreading high-volume promotional and marketing content.

  • Strong understanding of promotional messaging, pricing structures and offer mechanics.

  • Ability to identify and resolve inconsistencies across versions of creative assets.

  • Excellent organizational, communication and project management skills.

  • Knowledge of Chicago style and proficiency in programs such as InDesign, Photoshop, Figma, JIRA and Excel.

  • Ability to work effectively and independently under fluctuating deadlines while maintaining accuracy.

We welcome you to apply, even if you don't check all the boxes. Our passion is scouting life-long learners who are driven by curiosity, and who feel connected to our brands and share our desire to make an impact. We're always seeking bright new talent who leverage their unique experiences to discover, grow and evolve with our teams.
Benefits + Perks
  • Health & Well-being - Eligible associates and family members receive medical, dental, prescription and vision insurance, family planning (fertility, adoption & surrogacy support), fitness discounts, medical travel and more.
  • Associate Discount - We love our products just as much as you do! That's why we offer a great associate discount across all of our brands (J.Crew, J.Crew Factory, and Madewell).
  • Summer Fridays - In addition to our hybrid work model, we also close our office at 1:00 PM every Friday during the Summer months.
  • Community Impact - We support the communities where we live and work through our philanthropic efforts and the J.Crew Cares Program.
  • Winter Break - In addition to our PTO package, J.Crew Group offers a winter break at the end of December to eligible full-time associates at the Home Office to provide time to refresh and recharge.

Note: Availability of these benefits and perks may be subject to work location & employment type and may have certain eligibility requirements.
Hourly Range: $33.65 - $40.83
