Job Description
The DESIGN ENGINEER prepares or assists in the preparation of the scope of work development, design concepts, cost estimates and presentation as assigned by the Department Head or Project Manager. The purpose of this position is to provide professional, technical day-to-day support and input.
  • Assists the Project Manager or Department Head in the development and design of projects which consist of the plans, specifications and estimates.
  • Develop feasible design alternatives and compare significant parameters such as typical sections, horizontal and vertical alignments, right-of-way requirements and cost.
  • Identify and analyze the principle design features and major design alternatives that satisfy the project's purpose and need.
  • Produce detailed, final design plans, specifications and estimates in accordance with AASHTO, FHWA, state DOT and/or Municipal Departments of Public Works and Waste and Wastewater Utility.
  • Consult with the Project Manager or Department Head in the review of detailed plans, specifications and estimate of cost to ensure conformity with the project scope and design standards.
  • Review design details and coordinate technical recommendations, assess the cost-effective constructability of the project and generally evaluate the quality of the project.
  • Performs most assignments with instructions as to the general results expected.
  • Responsible for providing advanced technical support in the development/design of projects.
  • Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed project plans.
  • Assignments have clearly specified objectives and require the investigation of a limited number of variables.
  • Performs all engineering or analytical functions for an engineering design or analysis and is capable of solving difficult problems requiring evaluation of several alternatives.
  • Independently evaluates, selects and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria, using judgment, and makes and makes adaptations and modifications as necessary.
  • Ability to provide technical direction to technical employees and manages assigned tasks.
  • May be required to perform on-site field verification may be required to gather and confirm data.
  • Other related duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures

Job Requirements
EDUCATION AND/OR WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • College or university with a degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology with at least 4 years of relevant experience
  • E.I.T required
  • P.E preferred but not required
  • Advanced knowledge of AutoCAD
  • Valid driver's license required; must have satisfactory driving record in accordance with EMC fleet insurance requirements
  • Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with OSHA guidelines and directives, in conjunction with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
