Advertised Position Title:
Applicant Pool for Tutors, Science
Job Description:

Science tutors will work one-on-one or in small groups with undergraduate students. Tutors are responsible for supporting students' success by creating an optimum learning environment by leading students to a greater understanding of course materials.

This position would be available on both the Toledo and Findlay campuses, please indicate in the application questions which campus you would be able to teach at.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of student-centered tutoring strategies.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the tutoring discipline. Experience tutoring and/or teaching at the college level is desirable. Strong interpersonal skills and computer skills are necessary.
  • Ability to multi-task, collaborate with others, and work independently. Be able to analyze student's needs and explain materials in a variety of ways to build confidence and comprehension.

Essential Functions:

  • Candidate will help students understand and apply underlying principles and help them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Candidate will prepare for tutoring by becoming familiar with textbooks, software, and teaching tools used in courses.
  • Candidate will thoroughly and accurately document tutoring sessions to support reporting requirements.

Other Characteristics:

  • The tutor should be energetic, positive, creative, multi-tasking team player who is able to generate new ideas to better serve students. The candidate will need to be sensitive to the needs of at-risk students as well as maintain confidentiality of personal student and program information.

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Associate degree in science or two-year technical certificate.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred, in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field in the area of science.
  • Teaching and/or tutoring experience preferred. Must be able to work with students from various socioeconomic backgrounds.
