What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate user experience designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate User Experience Designer, you need foundational skills in user research, wireframing, prototyping, and visual design, typically supported by a degree in design or a related field. Familiarity with design tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD, and prototyping platforms is essential, and a basic understanding of HTML/CSS can be beneficial. Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help you interpret user needs and work effectively with cross-functional teams. These skills enable you to create user-centric solutions and contribute to intuitive, impactful digital experiences.

What does an associate user experience designer do?

An Associate User Experience (UX) Designer assists in creating intuitive, user-friendly digital products such as websites and apps. They collaborate with senior designers and cross-functional teams to conduct user research, create wireframes, and test prototypes. Their work helps ensure that products not only look appealing but are also easy to use and meet the needs of their target audience. Typically, this is an entry-level position where individuals gain hands-on experience in UX design processes and tools.

What are some common challenges faced by associate user experience designers when starting out in the field?

Associate User Experience Designers often encounter challenges such as balancing user needs with business goals and working within existing design systems. Navigating feedback from multiple stakeholders—such as developers, product managers, and senior designers—can also be demanding, especially when priorities conflict. Additionally, new designers may need to quickly adapt to various research and prototyping tools, while learning how to effectively communicate their design decisions to both technical and non-technical team members. These experiences, though challenging, help build strong collaborative and problem-solving skills essential for career growth in UX.

Job description

ComResource is looking for a UX Designer.

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with product managers as a thought partner to define problems, shape product direction, and explore creative solution spaces beyond simply translating requirements.
  • Turn complex scientific problems and ideas into clear, user-centered designs.
  • Own the design process end to end, from early concept and wireframes through polished, engineering-ready handoff.
  • Generate multiple creative solution paths for complex workflows, pushing beyond obvious or incremental improvements.
  • Operate comfortably in fast-moving environments where design, prototyping, and validation happen continuously.
  • Build and maintain design systems that keep products consistent and the team moving quickly.
  • Champion usability and accessibility and stay current with UX trends, techniques, and technologies.
  • Initiate user research and translate insights into design decisions that measurably improve the experience.
  • Embrace AI tools to support and accelerate design work across research, ideation, and rapid prototyping.

Essentials:

  • A degree in UX Design or Human-Computer Interaction, or a background in biological sciences paired with significant design experience.
  • 3–7 years of UX design experience, ideally shaping software products from concept to launch.
  • Strong proficiency in Figma with a portfolio that demonstrates design thinking, problem-solving, and craft.
  • Proven experience with rapid prototyping to communicate and validate design concepts.
  • Familiarity with design tokens and component libraries.
  • Solid understanding of user-centered design principles, usability, and accessibility standards such as WCAG.
  • Strong visual and interaction design skills with a keen eye for detail, micro-interactions, and creating delight for users.
  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills with the ability to make complex ideas clear to any audience.
  • Demonstrated ability to think conceptually and creatively, especially in complex or ambiguous domains.
  • Track record of delivering high-quality design outcomes with speed and pragmatism.
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment.
  • Comfortable working with AI-assisted design-to-code workflows.

Desired:

  • Experience designing for a scientific or life sciences audience.
  • Experience with Storybook.
