Role
About the Role
At Southland Credit Union, we believe helping people achieve financial well-being extends beyond the branch-it includes building secure, reliable digital experiences that our members and associates depend on every day. Behind every online transaction, internal application, and technology solution is a team committed to making banking simpler, safer, and more accessible.
As a Software Engineer, you'll play an important role in designing and building the applications that power our organization. You'll work across the full software development lifecycle, partnering with business leaders and fellow technology professionals to solve complex problems, modernize existing systems, and deliver solutions that create real value. We believe our engineers should have a voice in the technologies we adopt, the solutions we build, and the continuous improvement of our development practices.
This role is a great fit for someone who enjoys writing thoughtful, maintainable code, learning new technologies, and solving problems that have a measurable impact. If you're looking for an opportunity where your ideas are valued, your technical expertise is trusted, and your work helps improve the financial well-being of thousands of members, we'd love to hear from you.
This is an on-site/hybrid position based out of our headquarters in Los Alamitos, CA and requires a regular on-site presence. Candidates must reside in Southern California and be able to work the approved hybrid schedule. This is not a remote position, and applicants seeking fully remote work or residing outside of Southern California will not be considered.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
What You'll Be Doing

  • Partner with business leaders and internal stakeholders to understand challenges and translate business needs into scalable technology solutions.
  • Build responsive, user-friendly front-end experiences using current web development technologies.
  • Develop secure, reliable back-end applications and services that support business operations and member-facing solutions.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code that supports long-term application stability and future enhancements.
  • Optimize application performance, scalability, and security using industry best practices.
  • Collaborate with designers, developers, and IT teams throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Identify opportunities to improve existing applications, streamline development processes, and introduce new technologies where appropriate.
  • Support application deployments, troubleshoot production issues, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Stay current on emerging technologies and recommend innovative solutions that support Southland's strategic goals.

What You'll Bring
Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.

  • Five or more years of experience working with SQL, MySQL, or similar relational databases.
  • Five or more years of experience developing applications using the .NET Framework.
  • Experience consuming web services and APIs, including REST, JSON, XML, or SOAP.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of modern software development principles, architecture, and best practices.
  • Experience with front-end frameworks such as Angular, React, or Vue.js.
  • Experience using version control systems such as Git.
  • Knowledge of secure software development practices and application security principles.
  • Familiarity with back-end technologies such as Node.js or Python is a plus.
  • Experience with Symitar SymXchange or financial institution systems is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across technical and business teams.
  • Passion for continuous learning and staying current with evolving technologies and industry trends.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Software Security certification or Web Development certification is a plus.
  • Experience working within a banking or credit union environment is preferred.

Why You'll Love This Opportunity
Technology has the power to make banking simpler, safer, and more accessible. In this role, your work will directly support the digital experiences our members rely on every day while helping Southland continue to grow and innovate. The applications you build won't just improve internal processes-they'll help people manage their finances with confidence.
