What is an associate software engineer?

An associate software engineer works with a team of engineering professionals and developers to improve existing software or design new applications. As an associate software engineer, your job duties include coding software, coordinating with hardware engineers to ensure that different types of technology can run the software, and helping the QA team to test software before release. Typical qualifications for the career include a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field and relevant technical experience with software applications. You also need excellent communication, coding, and analytical problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work as part of a team.

What are some common challenges faced by associate software engineers when transitioning from academic projects to real-world development teams?

Associate Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to larger, more complex codebases and learning to work within established development workflows. Unlike academic projects, real-world development involves collaboration with cross-functional teams, adhering to coding standards, and following agile processes. Additionally, balancing learning new technologies with delivering features on tight deadlines can be demanding. However, support from mentors and structured onboarding programs usually helps smooth this transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and data structures, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages like Java, Python, or C++, as well as experience using version control systems like Git, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication set standout candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable software solutions, collaborating within development teams, and adapting to rapidly evolving technologies.

Job description

Overview

The Portals team sits at the heart of how Intuit Credit Karma delivers personalized experiences to its members.  As a Senior Software Engineer on this team, you'll own the system that decides — in real time  — what each member sees when they open the app. That means working on problems that directly impact millions of people and the financial decisions they make every day.

This is a high-leverage role where your work touches nearly every product team at Credit Karma. If a member gets shown the right offer at the right moment, there's a good chance the Portals platform made that happen.

Responsibilities

  • Shape Platform Strategy: Own the technical vision and long-term viability of the Portal platform that decides, in real time, what personalized content each Credit Karma member sees, tailored to their unique financial profile
  • Evolve the Targeting Engine: Lead the architectural design of our real-time rules and logic engine, ensuring it scales elegantly while maintaining millisecond-level response times on every app load.
  • Drive AI-Native Innovation: Champion the integration of GenAI and machine learning into the platform for smarter content selection and advanced personalization patterns.
  • Orchestrate Complex Initiatives: Drive high-impact tech initiatives end-to-end, sequencing complex dependencies and managing risks across multiple systems and layers of architecture.
  • Empower & Velocity-Proof Teams: Build reusable tools, testing infrastructure, and workflows that allow other product and marketing teams across the company to deploy changes faster and safer.
  • Elevate Engineering Talent: Provide clear goals, facilitate technical design reviews, and give actionable feedback to senior engineers so they can lead projects independently.
  • Solve Systemic Gaps: Partner closely with cross-functional leads and managers to systematically tackle technical debt, tooling deficiencies, and team skill gaps to continuously boost productivity.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 7+ years of experience delivering enterprise-class applications, with a strong focus on backend software development, API design, and robust client/server contracts.
  • Core Languages: Proficiency in mid-tier and backend functional languages, specifically TypeScript, Java , and/or Scala.
  • Architecture & Infrastructure: Deep expertise in designing scalable microservices architectures, messaging patterns, container management (Kubernetes, Docker), and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform).
  • Data & Database Design: Strong experience with relational database schema design, NoSQL, ORM concepts, and high-volume, low-latency data pipelining.
  • AI Integration Capabilities: Proficient in or highly capable of integrating and evaluating functional AI models (e.g., LLM prompting, personalization algorithms) in a production setting.
  • Foundational Excellence: Solid foundation in OOP, algorithms, web application internals, test automation (TDD, unit/integration testing), and CI/CD best practices.
  • Education: BS/MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience working with SaaS platforms or large-scale financial/experimentation platforms.
  • Experience with GraphQL and Node.js.
  • Proven track record of defining long-term technical strategies and influencing engineering organization best practices.
