What is an associate security engineer?

Associate Security Engineers are entry-level professionals who help protect an organization’s computer systems and networks from security threats. They typically assist in monitoring network activity, investigating security incidents, and implementing basic security measures under the supervision of senior staff. Their responsibilities may also include maintaining firewalls, performing vulnerability assessments, and ensuring compliance with security policies. This role serves as a foundational position for those looking to advance in the cybersecurity field.

What are some common challenges associate security engineers face when transitioning from academic settings to professional environments?

Associate Security Engineers often find that the pace and complexity of professional environments differ significantly from academic settings. Real-world security systems involve legacy technologies, rapidly evolving threats, and compliance requirements that may not be covered in coursework. Collaborating across teams, responding to incidents under pressure, and balancing security best practices with business needs can be challenging at first. However, this environment offers excellent hands-on learning opportunities and mentorship from experienced colleagues to help bridge the gap.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate security engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Security Engineer, you need a solid understanding of information security principles, networking, and risk assessment, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with security tools such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems (IDS), SIEM platforms, and relevant certifications like CompTIA Security+ or CEH is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for identifying vulnerabilities, mitigating threats, and collaborating with teams to maintain robust organizational security.

Job description

Job Number: R0242438

Cloud Security Engineer The Opportunity

Everyone is trying to "harness the cloud," but not everyone knows how to secure it. As a security engineer, you know how to assess and implement requirements that ensure the safety of information systems and protect them against intentional or inadvertent access or destruction. What if you could use your cloud security skills to improve mission‑critical applications for the Intelligence Community (IC)? We need you to help us develop cloud‑based security architectures for some of the IC's most critical systems.

As a security engineer on our team, you'll evaluate and support the documentation, validation, assessment, and accreditation processes necessary to ensure IT systems meet the organization's IA and security requirements. You'll assist in defining the organization's desired state and risk thresholds and analyze actual state information to assess compliance. You'll work with leaders to advise on codifying strategic objectives into doctrine and procedures that can help meet defined objectives. You'll assist with evaluation of computer applications, software, or specialized utility programs to determine if software assurance best practices are followed. You'll recommend tools and capabilities based on your research of the current environment and knowledge of various on‑premise, cloud‑based, and hybrid resources to address security requirements. You will implement the cloud security architectures, tools, and processes that you helped to shape and define. Your technical experience will be vital as you work with IC clients to ensure standards are met with security requirements. This is an opportunity to use the latest cloud technologies as you look for ways to secure your customer's environment while collaborating with tomorrow's cloud security experts. This position is located in Reston, Virginia.

You Have
  • 5+ years of experience building and administering cloud environments, utilizing cloud‑native functionality and COTS, GOTS, and open‑source tools to meet objectives
  • Experience with developing and evaluating security documentation, including system security plans, contingency plans, security procedures, and continuity of operations plans
  • Experience with security architecture evaluations, guidance development, and troubleshooting
  • Experience with the Risk Management Framework (RMF)
  • Experience with working in an Agile development environment
  • Knowledge of infrastructure‑as‑code concepts such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or Bicep
  • Active TS/SCI clearance; willingness to take a polygraph exam
  • Associate's degree and 5+ years of experience supporting IT projects and activities, Bachelor's degree and 3+ years, or Master's degree and 1+ year
  • Ability to obtain a DoD 8570 IAT Level II Certification such as Security+, CCNA‑Security, GSEC, SSCP, CySA+, GICSP, or CND within 30 days of start date
Nice If You Have
  • Experience with the software development life cycle (SDLC)
  • Experience with cloud technologies
  • Excellent team leadership, development, and client relationship skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Clearance

Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; TS/SCI clearance is required.
