Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
A Medical Technologist (MT)/ Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs routine and specialized clinical tests and specimen examinations in one or more areas within the laboratory consistent with extent of training. The MT/MLT is responsible for performing analyses according to established procedures, verifying results, and reporting results to the patient location and/or physician. The MT/MLT may assist with additional responsibilities as deemed appropriate by supervising technologists / technicians to include performing quality control and maintenance.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Job Specific:

  1. Demonstrates successful laboratory practice and methodologies (EF).
  2. Performs assigned instrumentation maintenance with some supervision as needed (EF). *
  3. Operates equipment, computers, and testing devices appropriately consulting leaders as needed (EF). *
  4. Reports accurate analyses with guidance by leaders as needed (EF). *
  5. Recognizes instrument malfunctions and learns to troubleshoot effectively (EF).
  6. Verifies and consults with a second technologist regarding delta checks and critical values (EF). *
  7. Participates in proficiency testing program (EF).
  8. Evaluates specimen integrity and uses reasoning skills to impact decision points (EF).
  9. Collects, accessions, processes, and distributes specimens to appropriate sections (EF).
  10. Monitors workflow through managing the tube system and incoming work (EF).
  11. Monitors inventory and restocks supplies (EF).
  12. Addresses staffing needs, in the absence of supervisory staff (EF).

Hospital:

  1. Adheres to organization-wide and other applicable policies and procedures.
  2. Day-to-day performance complies with the hospital’s Service Excellence Behavioral Expectations.
  3. Performs within the prescribed limits of the hospital’s Ethics, Compliance and Confidentiality Program guidelines.
  4. Performs within professional Scope of Practice at all times.

Job Requirements

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Required: 

1. MLT – Associate’s Degree from an accredited institution in clinical laboratory science or other related field (to include sixty (60) hours of science based hours) or alternate qualifications designated within CLIA ’88 standards. May be degreed and registered as an MLT if experience level has been achieved.

2. MT – Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree from an accredited institution in clinical laboratory science or other related field (to include sixty (60) hours of science based hours) or alternate qualifications designated within CLIA ’88 standards.  May be degreed and registered as an MLT or MLS if experience level has been achieved.

EXPERIENCE

Preferred:  MT/MLT – 6 months to one (1) year. Clinical hours during student rotation may be considered.

Special Skills and Abilities

 Required:  Critical, subjective, and objective reasoning skills

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Required: Registrant by ASCP, AMT, or equivalent certification that recognizes Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Lab Scientist qualifications.  Registry must be obtained within one (1) year of employment.
