The successful candidate will be working at our Brampton (100 Parkshore Drive), Ottawa (1800 Alta Vista Drive), or Calgary (2775 116 Ave NE) site office, with a mixture of on-site and off-site work to meet the needs of our organization. About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular full-time Associate Director, Molecular Testing/Genomics to join our dynamic Testing team in our Medical Affairs division.

The Testing team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by delivering accurate and timely results on donors and products, ensuring the highest standards of safety and quality in our products and services.

In this role, you will be responsible for leading the strategic, operational, and managerial oversight of the Molecular Testing Program and associated laboratory services. You will drive the development, validation, implementation, and continuous improvement of molecular testing services to ensure high-quality, compliance, and scalable testing operations. You will partner cross-functionally with Innovation, Medical Affairs, Quality & Regulatory Affairs, and Digital Solutions & Technology to deliver molecular testing solutions that support patient care and business objectives.

Formula for success
  • Leveraging your ability to lead complex cross-functional programs, you will lead short-term and long-term Molecular Testing Program ambitions which are aligned with organizational goals, including assay portfolio expansion and innovation roadmap. Accountable for the overall Molecular Testing Program vision, objectives, and benefit realization.
  • Harnessing your exceptional prioritization and communication skills, you will collaborate with medical and scientific leads in Testing and Innovation, to develop a Molecular Testing roadmap and set priorities.
  • Drawing on your experience in scaling molecular testing operations, you will support molecular testing and genomics operational excellence in turnaround time (TAT), throughput, cost efficiency, and scalability.
  • Applying your continuous growth mindset and ability to interpret business needs, you will establish and monitor molecular testing and genomics KPIs to drive performance and continuous improvement.
  • Utilizing your strong attention to detail and project management skills, you will provide guidance, oversight and leadership in the development of proposals, decisions, or other documents needed to obtain organizational support for potential strategic molecular projects. These documents will include high level information to identify and estimate project benefits, scope, approach, risks, resource requirements, timelines, regulatory requirements, costs and funding sources.
  • Focusing on your ability to analyze complex problems and experience applying risk management concepts, you will identify, assess and monitor Molecular Testing Program and project risks. Develop mitigation strategies against these risks and implement these strategies, as required.
  • Concentrating on your exceptional interpersonal skills, you will communicate all proposed changes in program scope, schedule, budget and risk to the Director, Testing, and Molecular Testing Program Steering Committee for review and approval.
  • Leveraging your strong leadership skills, you will recruit, train, oversee and direct project team members to effectively accomplish the goals and objectives of the program.
  • You will be responsible for encouraging and promoting compliance to all aspects of the Canadian Blood Services Quality Management System where applicable. 
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Desired education and skills
  • PhD, MD, or master's degree in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, or a related life sciences field.
  • 8-12+ years of experience in molecular diagnostics, clinical laboratory, or biotech/pharma environment.
  • 3-5+ years in a leadership, people management, or operational role.
  • In provinces where applicable, licensure with the provincial college for medical technologist in a related discipline is required.
  • Advanced verbal and written communications skills in English.
  • Deep understanding of molecular biology techniques and diagnostic workflows.
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory and quality requirements.
  • Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS), data management, and data analytics.
  • Program and project management expertise.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
