This Senior Consultant, Risk Management โ€“ P&C (Fleet), will be part of the Agribusiness Team. The role will support clients primarily across the Midwestern, Eastern and Southern United States, with occasional support in the Western United States as business needs require.

The consultant will conduct client assessments, identify fleet-related exposures and loss trends, develop client-specific recommendations, and provide risk management guidance. This role will also develop and deliver fleet risk management content and presentations to internal partners, including Risk Control, Underwriting, and staff associates, as well as to external clients.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • In-depth knowledge of the regulatory environment, legal trends, and their practical implications for the insurance industry.
  • In-depth understanding of regulatory compliance related to driver and fleet management.
  • Knowledge of state-specific laws, regulations, exemptions, and operating restrictions.
  • Knowledge of driver selection, hiring, training, supervision, and oversight practices.
  • Experience developing and implementing fleet safety programs.
  • Knowledge of industry safety standards, including telematics and vehicle safety technologies.
  • Ability to conduct on-site client assessments evaluating physical exposures, controls, and management policies and procedures affecting drivers.
  • Ability to identify loss trends, conduct root-cause analysis, and develop client-specific recommendations.
  • Ability to develop and deliver training and educational presentations related to fleet management, vehicle safety, and driver safety.

Prior experience managing a commercial fleet and/or formal experience in commercial auto or fleet insurance, risk management, safety, or a related field is preferred.

This position is remote and may be based in the Central or Eastern time zones. Regular travel (up to 50%) to client locations may be required, including overnight travel.

Our agribusiness risk management team is an integral part of our organization. We develop relationships with customers, perform survey work to look at property and casualty exposures and recommend improvements that decrease risk. Through collaboration we share our knowledge and expertise across Nationwide to enhance our agriculture insurance lines and their market position.

This role is the highest level technical expert with both staff and field responsibilities in one or more highly specialized risk management segments. This is a director level individual contributor role responsible for: developing company policies, procedures and standards of practice; directing the implementation of strategies and providing expert technical consulting for the specialty risk area across the enterprise. Provides expertise, advice, and counsel on regulatory issues, specific risks, forms, risk improvement, initiatives, corporate risk management projects, and agency relationships. Provides the highest level technical and risk management services to customers and policyholders. Drives technical excellence through training, certification, and development of Risk Management associates throughout the operation.

Job DescriptionKey Responsibilities
  • Leads research to develop/implement risk management initiatives for technical area of responsibilities within RMS. Anticipates, recognizes, and addresses the impact that risk management projects and initiatives have on other business partners (Commercial and Farm Underwriting, Sales, Claims, etc.). May independently perform research or lead a team of risk management consultants and/or cross functional teams in order to complete the project.
  • Provides technical evaluation and recommended action for Risk Management Services and makes final recommendations relative to highly specialized/niche risk management opportunities. Makes recommendations for implementation of risk management practices or services based on expertise. Provides risk management perspective and technical expertise to project teams, regional teams and other teams. Utilizes experience, knowledge and skills to assess specific risk management opportunities and make action-oriented recommendations.
  • Accountable for driving technical excellence for a specialty throughout the organization. Builds technical knowledge and skills within the business unit through assessment, development and implementation programs and processes to increase associate and business performance in the specialty.
  • Drives technical direction of specialty related to quality control, risk selection, competitive monitoring, and development of knowledge and partnerships across related business units within the enterprise (underwriting, systems, services, claims, sales, distribution, marketing, etc.). Understands and drives critical thinking and technical risk management services based on analytics, loss analysis and exposure.
  • Consults with Risk Management Services on new or highly specialized concepts, classes of business or operational opportunities. This may involve assessment of risk, exposure, opportunities and profit potential. The consulting is typically in situations where answers are unknown or specific business practices have not been established within the organization.
  • Develops, maintains, and utilizes key business relationships with business partners, professional organizations, and industry groups to strengthen the overall quality, accuracy and impact of Risk Management Services.
  • May oversee associate management including performance management, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow and organization planning, day-to-day management, hiring and placement, and disciplinary actions for direct and possibly indirect reports.
  • Maintains a high level of technical knowledge within a specialty related to industry changes, regulatory compliance, continuing education requirements, technical changes, industry trends, and new risk management techniques. Provides the highest-level technical knowledge and risk management services to individual policyholders as assigned.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Experience

Typically, ten or more years in a risk management specialty field. Strong insurance and risk management experience with related complex or specialized exposure preferred (e.g. Agribusiness or CL Middle Market). Experience developing policy and practice from a staff perspective, customer service and operational experience. If position has direct reports, at least 5 years of management experience is required.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

Recognized as an expert with the company and industry. Requires extensive knowledge of insurance products and coverageโ€™s; safety, loss prevention, and risk management concepts; and strong business acumen. Proven communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written, to ensure effective interaction with business partners, associates, management, agents, and customers. Proficient in the use and application of all Microsoft Office products. High level proficiency in customer focus, technical learning, relationship management, decision quality, and business acumen.
