Senior Network Engineer / Network SME
POS-200

Location: On-Site | Herndon, VA
Company: Emergent Technologies Inc.
Emergent Technologies Inc., a veteran-owned IT and engineering solutions provider based in Herndon, VA, is seeking an experienced Senior Network Engineer or Network Subject Matter Expert (SME) to lead enterprise-scale networking initiatives. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical knowledge, hands-on experience, and leadership in designing, securing, and maintaining complex network infrastructures.
This is a full-time, on-site role supporting high-impact government and commercial programs.
Required Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 16 years of relevant experience, or
  • Master’s degree with a minimum of 14 years of relevant experience
Technical Skills & Competencies
Candidates must demonstrate expert-level capabilities in the following areas:
  • Deep understanding of core networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, etc.)
  • Design, implementation, and optimization of enterprise network architectures

  • Strong knowledge of network security, including:
    • Firewalls
    • VPNs
    • Access Control Lists (ACLs)
  • Experience with cloud networking (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
  • Familiarity with network virtualization and software-defined networking (SDN)

  • Practical knowledge of routing and switching technologies, including:
    • Routing protocols: EIGRP, BGP, etc.
    • Switching protocols: STP, LACP, VTP, etc.
Professional Experience
  • Adept in network engineering, focusing on design, deployment, and operational support of complex environments
  • Experience in large-scale network implementations, including performance tuning and scalability
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues in real-time
  • Skilled in creating and maintaining technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, implementation plans, and technical notes
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers and serve as a trusted technical advisor across teams
  • Experience working with and briefing technical review boards and leadership
Subject Matter Expertise
  • Deep expertise in one or more of the following:
    • Routing and switching infrastructure

    • Network security (firewalls, IDS/IPS, segmentation)
    • Cloud networking (multi-cloud/hybrid environments)
