Job description

Position Summary
The Associate Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for supporting the design, implementation, and daily operation of Karmak's IT infrastructure. This role blends infrastructure engineering, systems administration, and end-user support, ensuring reliable, secure, and scalable technology services across the organization.
This position plays a key role in maintaining compute, storage, virtualization, and cloud platforms, while also providing hands-on support for end users and participating in service desk operations. The ideal candidate is technically strong, service-oriented, and capable of troubleshooting across multiple layers of the IT environment.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Support and maintain server, storage, virtualization, and cloud infrastructure (on-prem and Azure)
  • Perform systems administration tasks including Active Directory, Group Policy, patching, and system monitoring
  • Assist with backup, disaster recovery, and data protection strategies
  • Provide Tier 1-3 support for desktops, servers, and business applications
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, network, and connectivity issues
  • Participate in help desk operations, including ticket resolution, escalation, and end-user communication
  • Assist in the deployment of new technologies, systems, and infrastructure improvements
  • Monitor system performance, availability, and security; proactively identify and resolve issues
  • Collaborate with internal teams to support business applications and operational needs
  • Maintain accurate documentation for systems, processes, and troubleshooting procedures
  • Assist with testing and validation of new systems, patches, and configurations
  • Participate in on-call rotation and respond to after-hours incidents as needed
Security Responsibilities:
  • Implement and maintain security best practices across servers, endpoints, and infrastructure systems
  • Monitor systems for security events and participate in incident response and remediation efforts
  • Manage patching and vulnerability remediation for operating systems, applications, and infrastructure components
  • Support identity and access management, including permissions, group policies, and least-privilege enforcement
  • Assist in the configuration and maintenance of security tools such as endpoint protection, firewalls, and monitoring platforms
  • Participate in security audits, risk assessments, and compliance initiatives
  • Maintain secure configurations for virtualization platforms, storage systems, and cloud environments (e.g., Microsoft Azure)
  • Assist in backup and disaster recovery planning with a focus on data integrity and ransomware protection
  • Monitor and respond to alerts from SIEM, endpoint detection, and other security systems
  • Document and enforce security standards, procedures, and system hardening guidelines
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure secure deployment of applications and infrastructure changes
  • Stay current with emerging security threats, vulnerabilities, and mitigation strategies
Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of experience in IT infrastructure, systems administration, or technical support roles
  • Strong knowledge of Windows operating systems (Windows 10/11 and Windows Server 2016+)
  • Experience with Microsoft technologies including:
  • Active Directory & Group Policy
  • Microsoft 365 / Exchange Online
  • Endpoint Management (Intune or similar)
  • Familiarity with virtualization platforms (Hyper-V preferred; VMware a plus)
  • Basic experience with cloud platforms (Microsoft Azure preferred)
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs)
  • Experience with backup and recovery solutions is a plus
  • Exposure to firewall and security concepts is a plus
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across multiple systems
  • Excellent communication skills with both technical and non-technical users
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong documentation and organizational skills
Work Requirements:
  • Hybrid work schedule consisting of approximately 70% in-office and 30% remote work
  • Participation in an on-call rotation (1-2 weeks per month)
  • Occasional evening or weekend work for maintenance or incident response
  • Ability to report onsite to the Springfield Colocation location as needed for critical issues or project work
  • Occasional travel may be required for conference setup and tear down.
