Job description

Job Opportunity: Associate Hospital Epidemiologist

Our organization is looking for an Associate Hospital Epidemiologist to enhance and support Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) initiatives within a specific Operating Unit. This role will operate under the mentorship of the Hospital Epidemiologist and System Epidemiologist, playing a vital part in ensuring high standards of safety and quality care for patients, staff, and visitors across our healthcare facilities.

This position is ideal for an early- to mid-career physician specializing in infectious diseases who is eager to grow in the fields of hospital epidemiology, quality assurance, and patient safety.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Hospital Epidemiologist in managing the infection prevention and control program for the Operating Unit.
  • Collaborate with the Manager of Infection Prevention and Control to execute IPC strategies, best practices, and improvement initiatives.
  • Provide clinical insights to the IPC team in partnership with the Hospital Epidemiologist and IPC Manager.
  • Help monitor compliance with national infection prevention guidelines from organizations such as CDC, APIC, and SHEA.
  • Participate in outbreak investigations, responses to emerging infectious diseases, and risk assessments related to infection prevention.
  • Engage in root cause analyses and develop mitigation plans for healthcare-associated infections.
  • Support the creation and implementation of infection prevention protocols in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Contribute to meeting regulatory and accreditation standards concerning infection prevention (CMS, The Joint Commission, OSHA, state health departments).
  • Take part in surveillance activities, internal audits, and investigations related to infections.
  • Assist in educating and training both clinical and non-clinical staff on IPC principles and emerging infectious diseases.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on infection prevention, patient safety, and employee health issues.
  • Collaborate with academic and research partners on IPC-related educational or scholarly projects.
  • Work with data analytics teams to facilitate the collection, analysis, and reporting of IPC metrics.
  • Utilize infection prevention data to guide quality improvement initiatives and early detection strategies.
  • Help prepare and present infection prevention reports to hospital and system leadership.
  • Collaborate with Hospital Epidemiologists, executive leadership, nursing, quality, safety, risk management, and employee health teams.
  • Engage in infectious disease emergency preparedness and response activities.
Qualifications
  • MD or DO degree with licensure (or eligibility for licensure) in the State of Georgia.
  • Board certified or board eligible in Infectious Diseases (ABIM).
  • Completion of or intent to complete formal training in healthcare epidemiology (e.g., SHEA course or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated interest and foundational experience in hospital epidemiology or infection prevention.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within interdisciplinary clinical and operational teams.
  • Reputation for professionalism and teamwork among physicians and hospital leadership.
  • Prior involvement in healthcare epidemiology, infection prevention, or quality improvement initiatives during or after fellowship.
