Our Opportunity:

Chewy is seeking a Software Engineer II for our HR Systems & Solutions team in Boston, Minneapolis or Seattle.  This team builds and deploys software products that power critical HR experiences and business operations across the company. In this role, you will develop, enhance, and support scalable applications, services, and integrations that improve how our HR organization operates and serves team members.  This role will be working closely with our business partners, so strong communication skills are essential.  Further, you will be on a high-performing engineering team where we value broad-based technical skills in cloud-based services, databases, information security, AI, MLOps and more. You will have the opportunity to collaborate across the HR and engineering organizations to deliver self-service solutions which empower internal customers to move rapidly while building on Chewy’s solid technical foundation.

What You’ll Do:

  • Design, build, test, deploy, and support software products and services for the HR organization

  • Build operational Human Resources applications and tools with a focus on data and AI that leverage Chewy’s proprietary AI and machine learning platforms.

  • Partner with Human Resources stakeholders to understand Chewy’s HR operating models and design solutions to help automate and optimize high-touch Human Resources business processes in a fast-paced 24x7 operating environment

  • Work closely with non-technical stakeholders to define requirements and translate those into technical deliverables

  • Contribute to AI-enabled features, intelligent automation, and agentic workflows that improve internal processes and user experiences

  • Drive innovation through rapid prototyping and iterative development

  • Think creatively to solve problems that don’t have existing solutions

  • Troubleshoot production issues, debug across systems, and support service reliability and operational health

  • Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and team engineering practices

  • Apply sound software engineering fundamentals to write high-quality, performant, and maintainable code

  • Continuously learn new technologies and contribute to a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement

What You’ll Need:

  • BS degree in Computer Science, a similar technical field of study, or equivalent practical experience

  • 5+ years of strong programming experience with modern development technologies like Python, React and Java

  • Strong understanding of data models, SQL, APIs, Machine Learning and AI/LLM platforms

  • Demonstrate exceptional attention to detail by thoroughly analyzing production data, identifying root causes of issues, and driving timely, effective resolutions in high-impact environments

  • Experience working in a fast-paced e-commerce fulfillment, customer service or similar environment with large, non-exempt populations

  • Must be team oriented and have a customer first approach

  • Proficiency in Computer Science fundamentals – object-oriented design, data structures, algorithm - design, problem solving, and complexity analysis

  • Be a hands-on Engineer spending significant percentage of their time writing code or debugging issues

  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices for the full software development life cycle including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations

  • Experience evaluating, measuring, and tuning application performance

  • Experience with GitHub, DevOps, Jenkins, AWS and Terraform

Bonus (if applicable):

  • Experience supporting HR systems or other enterprise-wide internal business applications

  • Experience building and deploying agentic AI solutions to automate workflows, support decision-making, and improve internal user experiences

  • Familiarity with modern AI engineering patterns such as prompt orchestration, retrieval-augmented generation, model APIs, evaluation frameworks, or human-in-the-loop workflows

  • Experience with data engineering in large scale database environments, including utilities such as dbt or Apache Airflow

  • Experience with OpenAPI, Swagger, or stoplight.io

  • Experience with industry leading HCM Platforms, including Workday and UKG

  • Experience working in Agile development environments

Why You’ll Love Working Here

  • You’ll build products that support important employee and business experiences across Chewy

  • You’ll work on meaningful technical challenges with a collaborative engineering team

  • You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to modern HR technology through automation, platform engineering, and AI innovation

  • You’ll be empowered to take ownership of your work and deliver solutions with real impact
