The position of Senior Associate General Counsel, Litigation ("SAGC-L") is in the Legal Department and reports directly to the Vice President and Managing Counsel, Litigation ("VP-L") and is responsible for handling legal and other matters as determined and requested by the VP-L, with a particular focus on potential or pending litigation matters and investigations relating to the company. 

How you'll contribute 

A Senior Associate General Counsel who excels in this role:

  • Oversees and manages all aspects of potential or pending litigation matters and investigations, with a focus on managed care payor disputes and litigation.

  • Retains and manages outside counsel and third-party experts, including evaluating the expense, effectiveness and quality of their work.

  • Oversees and manages all aspects of electronic and other discovery, including the implementation of legal holds.

  • Conducts internal investigations of potential or pending litigation matters and investigations, including making recommendations based upon the findings of the investigations.

  • Creates and implements strategies to prevent the occurrence or reoccurrence of litigation matters and investigations, including educating attorneys and business partners about those strategies.

  • Maintains an awareness of applicable healthcare policies, laws and regulations and assisting the company in ensuring compliance with those policies, laws and regulations.

  • Provides general legal advice and guidance to attorneys and business partners regarding the interpretation and negotiation of third-party agreements, including agreements with managed care payors.

  • Creates and implements processes and procedures for the Legal Department, including ones related to legal budgets, reports, requests and discovery.

  • Provides ongoing reports to the VP-L and other attorneys and business partners about potential and pending litigation matters, including proposed strategies for their resolution. 

  • Fulfills other duties and responsibilities assigned or delegated from time-to-time by the VP-L.

What we're looking for

  • Experience with and an understanding of healthcare-related laws and regulations, including the operational and transactional impact of those laws and regulations.

  • Experience with and an understanding of healthcare and general litigation matters and investigations, including the ability to manage those independently, efficiently and effectively.

  • A Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school and a license to practice law in the State of Tennessee.

  • 5+ years of relevant experience highly preferred as a licensed attorney; experience with managed care payor disputes preferred.

  • Ability to travel up to 25%.
