What is an associate field engineer?

Associate Field Engineers are entry-level professionals who assist in the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of technical equipment and systems at client sites or in the field. They typically work under the supervision of senior engineers, supporting project implementation, performing routine inspections, and ensuring equipment operates efficiently. This role often requires travel, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with clients and team members. Associate Field Engineers may also be responsible for documenting service activities and providing technical support to customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate field engineer?

To thrive as an Associate Field Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering fundamentals, problem-solving, and a relevant bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-specific tools like CAD software, diagnostic equipment, and safety certifications such as OSHA are typically required. Strong communication, adaptability, and teamwork skills are vital for collaborating with clients and cross-functional teams in variable field environments. These skills and qualifications ensure efficient project execution, technical accuracy, and effective client service in dynamic field settings.

What are some common challenges an associate field engineer might face when working on-site, and how can they prepare for them?

As an Associate Field Engineer, you may encounter challenges such as adapting to rapidly changing site conditions, troubleshooting unexpected technical issues, and effectively communicating with both on-site crews and project managers. Preparation involves familiarizing yourself with project plans, staying up to date with safety protocols, and developing strong problem-solving skills. Building solid relationships with team members and being proactive in seeking guidance from more experienced engineers can also help you navigate on-site challenges successfully.

Summary of the role

As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment, where your ideas and contributions will be valued and respected.

This role supports installation, startup, commissioning, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, customer training, service documentation, and installed base support for extrusion dies and tooling, screen changers, melt pumps, process valves, pelletizers, cleaning ovens, and related auxiliary equipment. As Nordson's primary technical representative in the field, this position partners closely with customers and internal Sales, Engineering, Manufacturing, Spare Parts, and Service teams to resolve technical issues, strengthen customer relationships, and identify service, repair, upgrade, and spare parts opportunities.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review assigned projects before travel to understand drawings, equipment configuration, component function, application requirements, and customer expectations.
  • Prepare the tools, equipment, and safety items needed to complete service assignments successfully.
  • Provide installation support, startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance for Nordson PPS equipment, including extrusion dies and tooling, screen changers, melt pumps, process valves, pelletizers, cleaning ovens, and related auxiliary systems.
  • Train customer personnel on safe operation, maintenance, startup, shutdown, cleaning, troubleshooting, and best practices for Nordson PPS equipment.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, process control, PLC logic, PID loop, control integration, and AC/DC drive issues.
  • Perform hands-on field service work safely using appropriate tools, lifting equipment, PPE, and customer-site safety practices.
  • Complete service reports that document work performed, equipment condition, failures identified, corrective actions, recommendations, and customer follow-up items.
  • Collect and document installed base data, customer feedback, equipment performance information, service findings, and follow-up actions in the applicable CRM or service management system.
  • Provide technical support and follow-up assistance to customers by phone, email, Teams, or other approved communication methods.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Sales, Manufacturing, Aftermarket Services, Spare Parts, and Product Development to resolve customer issues and address recurring field concerns.
  • Prepare field service quotations and provide technical recommendations related to service scope, labor requirements, spare parts, upgrades, and aftermarket opportunities.
  • Follow all Nordson and customer safety requirements, including PPE usage, site orientation, lockout/tagout expectations, and travel safety practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

  • Associate degree or two-year technical degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Industrial Technology, or a related field preferred; equivalent hands-on experience may be considered.
  • Five or more years of experience supporting plastics extrusion, polymer processing, pelletizing, filtration, tooling, process equipment, industrial maintenance, or related field service applications preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues in industrial plant environments.
  • Experience with extrusion tooling, die maintenance, screen changers, melt pumps, valves, pelletizers, cleaning systems, or related Nordson PPS equipment preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products required; experience with CRM or service management systems, such as C4C or Salesforce, preferred.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience maintaining, assembling, adjusting, and troubleshooting industrial equipment.
  • Strong electrical troubleshooting skills, including sensors, wiring, drives, controls, and related components.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic systems, schematics, PLCs, PID controls, process control integration, and AC/DC drive systems.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, assembly, and tooling drawings, schematics, specifications, and product manuals.
  • Ability to diagnose extrusion, filtration, melt delivery, pelletizing, and tooling performance issues and communicate practical corrective actions.
  • Professional communication skills with the ability to work effectively with customers, plant personnel, maintenance teams, engineering teams, production leadership, sales, and management.
  • Customer-focused approach with the ability to remain organized, professional, and solution-oriented in high-pressure service situations.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, adapt to changing travel plans, work independently, and make sound technical decisions with limited on-site support.
  • Strong written communication skills for service reports, customer follow-up, technical recommendations, and internal feedback.
  • Ability to learn new equipment, processes, systems, and applications quickly.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Work is performed in field, manufacturing, production, and office environments.
