To thrive as an Associate Engineering Manager, you need a solid background in engineering principles, experience leading projects, and typically a relevant degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Asana), version control systems (such as Git), and sometimes Agile certifications is highly valued. Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help in motivating teams and managing stakeholder expectations. These skills and qualities are essential for ensuring project success, fostering team development, and delivering high-quality engineering outcomes.

What are the primary challenges faced by an Associate Engineering Manager when transitioning from an individual contributor role?

One of the main challenges Associate Engineering Managers encounter during this transition is balancing technical responsibilities with new leadership duties. Instead of focusing solely on coding or technical tasks, you will need to prioritize mentoring, project management, and facilitating team collaboration. This shift often requires developing strong communication skills and the ability to delegate effectively while still staying engaged with technical decisions. Navigating these changes successfully can set the foundation for further leadership opportunities.

How much should an engineering manager be paid?

The salary for an engineering manager typically ranges from $100,000 to $180,000 annually, depending on experience, industry, and location. Senior engineering managers or those in high-demand sectors may earn higher compensation, often including bonuses and stock options. Compensation also depends on the size of the company and the complexity of projects managed.

Description

Serious Development is a boutique healthcare strategy, product, and software engineering firm. We partner with healthcare organizations to solve complex operational challenges through thoughtfully designed custom software.

We are searching for an Associate Software Engineering Manager to lead one of our software teams and be responsible for ensuring that the team meets commitments made to the business and implements code according to the technical architecture that you specify. When implementation complications arise, you are able to recommend paths forward; whether it involves tweaks to the technical architecture or adjusting business requirements. You will be an integral part of the Engineering Leadership structure as the point-person between the Engineers on the ground and the business.

Responsibilities (What you'll do)
  • Act as the primary point of contact for your team in all matters
  • Coordinate the engineering team's day-to-day activities so that implementation commitments are delivered on or ahead of schedule
  • Collaborate with our Product Managers and UX Designers to ensure that the engineering team delivers what our clients need and want.
  • Create technical architecture documentation and diagrams for the project and ensure that the engineering team's deliverables are implemented accordingly
  • Identify and convey technical considerations, risks, and trade-offs
  • Contribute to the engineering team's implementation efforts, approximately 40% of your capacity
  • Ensure that the code you and your team deliver has an extremely high level of quality and an extremely low potential for defects that will surface in the production environments
  • Author documentation of your code that is useful for your team members and other members of Engineering
  • Dive into code with engineers as technical challenges arise
  • Develop proofs of concepts as needed
  • Review code written by your team members to help catch issues before they surface after a deployment
  • Train internal resources on technical topics
  • Hire top talent onto your team as needed
  • Ensure that your team members use their time effectively and efficiently
  • Mitigating blockers for your team members if they are unable to clear them
  • Managing your team members' time-off requests
  • Mentor engineers in best practices, technical knowledge, and collaboration
  • Act as the scrum master for the engineering team
  • Keep current with engineering best practices, design principles, technology, security, and compliance in order to apply that knowledge to all of the responsibilities above
Requirements (What we're looking for)

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a similar engineering major.
  • 5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer (a relevant Master's degree may be substituted for one year of this requirement), including 2+ years in a technical leadership role.

Technical Mastery

  • You bring a versatile background working with multiple languages, frameworks, databases, and tools, alongside significant engineering mastery in one or more elements of our core stack: Python, PHP (Laravel/Cake), C# (.NET), Angular, React, Flutter, and ML/Data Science packages.
  • Proven experience engineering SaaS products/platforms and cloud-based architectures.
  • Hands-on experience engineering with containers, design patterns, and Linux and/or MacOS environments.
  • Strong architectural habits, particularly Test-Driven Development (TDD).
  • Active participation in widely-used open source projects.

Team & Logistics

  • Experience working as a highly collaborative member of an engineering team, backed by excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Authorization to work in the US.
  • Must be located in (or willing to relocate to) one of the following states: NH, VT, MA, CT, NY, NJ, or [Eastern] PA.

Highly Desirable Preferences

  • Previous engineering experience within the HealthTech industry.
  • Working proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese or Ukrainian language skills is strongly preferred.
