What is an associate engineer?

Associate Engineers are entry-level engineering professionals who support more experienced engineers in designing, developing, testing, and maintaining various projects in their field. They typically work under supervision and assist with tasks such as drafting technical documents, conducting research, analyzing data, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Associate Engineers often gain practical experience and training to advance to higher-level engineering roles as they develop their skills.

What are some typical challenges associate engineers face when transitioning from academic projects to industry roles?

Associate Engineers often find the transition from academic projects to industry roles challenging due to differences in project scope, teamwork dynamics, and pace. In industry, you’ll likely work on larger, multi-disciplinary teams where effective communication and collaboration are crucial. Additionally, projects often have stricter deadlines and require adherence to established processes and standards, which may be less emphasized in academic settings. Embracing continuous learning and seeking mentorship from senior engineers can help ease this transition and set you up for success.

Job description

RAM Aerospace has been powering flight and space exploration since 1975, delivering precision solenoids, valves, actuators, LVDTs, and RVDTs for commercial, defense, and space applications. Headquartered in St. George, Utah, with a facility in Valencia, California, we build mission-critical components that the world's leading aerospace programs depend on. Join a team that builds the future of aerospace, on time, with excellence. Your career takes off here!
As an Associate Design Engineer, you are launching your career in high-performance aerospace engineering. You will work under the mentorship of our Senior Project Engineers, bridging the gap between theoretical design and real-world manufacturing. This is a hands-on role where you will perform detailed analysis, create 3D models, and support the transition of your designs from a computer screen to a flight-ready component. You will learn the rigorous standards of the aerospace industry, engage with customers, and help troubleshoot complex mechanical challenges. If you are eager to learn, ready to design, and want to see your work fly, this is your runway.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design & Analysis: Support Project Engineers from conception to completion. You will perform design calculations, conduct tolerance stack-up analysis, and utilize reliability tools to ensure our products meet mission requirements.
  • CAD Modeling: utilize SolidWorks (or Solid Edge) to create detailed 3D models and engineering drawings. You will ensure all designs meet safety factors and risk mitigation standards.
  • Production Support: You aren't just a desk engineer; you support the shop floor. You will assist in the transition from prototype to production, ensuring all tooling, gages, and work instructions are ready for launch.
  • Sustaining Engineering: Support legacy products by processing Engineering Changes (ECs), creating rework routings, and addressing Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs).
  • Failure Analysis: Put on your detective hat. You will support the failure analysis process, helping to troubleshoot and diagnose non-performing products to determine the root cause of issues.
  • Project Management: Maintain master schedules for your assigned projects and participate in periodic design reviews to keep the team on track.
  • Collaboration: Interact frequently with customers via email, teleconference, and site visits. You will also work closely with Quality and Manufacturing teams to understand process specifications.

Requirements
  • Legal: Must be able to pass a comprehensive criminal background check and drug screening. Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum (due to ITAR requirements).
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field is required.
  • CAD Proficiency: Working knowledge of 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Solid Edge, or AutoCAD).
  • Technical Fundamentals: Understanding of basic engineering calculations, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and mechanical design principles.
  • Communication: Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly, both verbally and in writing. You must be comfortable working in a team environment and interacting with customers.
  • Travel: Willingness to travel to customer sites or suppliers as required (Note: Travel frequency may vary based on project needs).

Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to lift/carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to sit and stand constantly.
  • Must possess the manual dexterity to handle/use fingers constantly for computer work and part handling.
