What is an associate engineer?

Associate Engineers are entry-level engineering professionals who support more experienced engineers in designing, developing, testing, and maintaining various projects in their field. They typically work under supervision and assist with tasks such as drafting technical documents, conducting research, analyzing data, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Associate Engineers often gain practical experience and training to advance to higher-level engineering roles as they develop their skills.

What are some typical challenges associate engineers face when transitioning from academic projects to industry roles?

Associate Engineers often find the transition from academic projects to industry roles challenging due to differences in project scope, teamwork dynamics, and pace. In industry, you’ll likely work on larger, multi-disciplinary teams where effective communication and collaboration are crucial. We are seeking an experienced Senior Traffic Design Engineer to plan, manage, and deliver complex transportation projects with a focus on Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) and Signing/Pavement Marking. This role is suited for a seasoned professional who brings strong technical expertise, sound judgment, and a collaborative leadership style on multidisciplinary project teams. • Serve as technical lead on mid- to large-scale traffic design assignments, ensuring quality control and compliance with MUTCD, AASHTO, DOT, and applicable agency standards.
  • Prepare and oversee the development of studies, technical reports, construction plans, specifications, and estimates from concept through final delivery.
  • Coordinate with clients, public agencies, project stakeholders, and multidisciplinary internal teams to deliver successful transportation projects.
  • Manage staff assignments, workloads, mentoring, and resource coordination across traffic and related disciplines.
Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies:
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license required
  • 8+ years of professional experience in traffic with a focus on signing and MOT

  • Proficiency with MicroStation OpenRoads, AutoCAD Civil 3D, SignCAD, or other applicable software common to the field of transportation engineering
  • Hands‑on experience with Synchro/SimTraffic, Vistro, and Vissim preferred
  • Experience in roadway design is preferred

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects, meet schedules and budgets, and maintain positive client relationships.
  • Ability to train and mentor less experienced staff with design and project delivery
  • A desire to grow personally and professionally with each project while working in a team environment to create designs and drawings supporting our client’s overall project goals
