Job description

Description SUMMARY Perform a variety of subprofessional office and field engineering work including planning, designing and coordinating construction, operation and maintenance of electrical generation, transmission and distribution systems; to provide assistance to other engineering staff; customers, construction personnel, outside agencies, and others as necessary; and may provide functional and technical supervision over less experienced technical staff as assigned. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Engineering Technician - Electrical I This is the entry level class of the Engineering Technician - Electrical series. Incumbents may have limited job related experience and are trained on-the-job.

Engineering Technician - Electrical II This is the full journey level class within the Engineering Technician - Electrical series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Engineering Technician - Electrical I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Examples of Duties DUTIES RESPONSIBLITIES Prepare detailed electrical engineering designs and drawings related to the construction of a variety of electrical generation, transmission and distribution systems. Prepare engineering calculations including electrical load and fuse size, pole and arm stress calcs, primary and secondary voltage drops and flicker for electrical line construction projects. Process applications for facility changes and overhead and underground line extensions; coordinate and schedule capital projects.

Perform inspections of construction and job sites as necessary; estimate required labor and materials; ensure compliance with regulations and standards; order materials for each job site. Participate in the preparation of a variety of drawings, specifications and material estimates related to electrical engineering projects including generation, transmission and distribution systems; update distribution maps at the completion of construction. Revise electrical diagrams of installation for equipment and a variety of other construction projects; assist in the testing of installed equipment.

Prepare a variety of studies and reports related to specific area of assignment; conduct customer surveys; assist in the preparation of short and long range planning. Develop engineering construction standards; download and read research recorders; troubleshoot field recorder problems; identify opportunities for improving electrical system efficiency. Answer questions and concerns from the public regarding electrical engineering activities; provide information related to methods and standards to the public and developers.

Update and maintain records and files in the computer. Utilize and other software including engineering and design applications. Prepare a variety of reports and records related to electrical engineering; update and maintain records and files related to area of assignment.

Coordinate electrical engineering related activities with other District administrations, departments and outside agencies. Coordinate and review the work of technical staff assigned to electrical engineering; assist in training and inspect work performed by assigned staff. Perform other related duties as required or assigned by supervisor.

Typical Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the skills and abilities would be: Education Engineering Technician - Electrical I-II Equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in engineering, mathematics, economics, or drafting, or a related field. Experience Engineering Technician - Electrical I None required.

Engineering Technician - Electrical II Two years of increasingly responsible experience performing duties equivalent to the Engineering Technician - Electrical I for the Turlock Irrigation District. Skills and Abilities Interpersonal and Communication Engineering Technician - Electrical I-II - Must have ability to: understand and carry out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Technical and Analytical Engineering Technician - Electrical I - Must have knowledge of: mathematics including algebra, trigonometry and geometry; engineering drafting methods and procedures, both manual and computer based; and modern office procedures, computer equipment and software applications.

Must have ability to: prepare and maintain accurate records and files; prepare reports and correspondence; and read and prepare maps and engineering plans. In addition to the qualifications for Engineering Technician - Electrical I: Engineering Technician - Electrical II - Must have knowledge of: mathematics as applied to computing basic electricity; nomenclature, symbols, methods, practices, techniques and instruments used in electrical drafting; principles and techniques of electrical drafting; and methods and techniques of construction. Administration and Operations Must have ability to: perform office work related to electrical drafting and job estimates; independently prepare maps and drawings; tabulate and plot field data; review plans and calculations to ensure conformance with standards; and gather and compile data for complex reports.

Supplemental Information Necessary Special Requirements Possession of an appropriate California driver's license. While the minimum passing score is 70%, candidates who score highest may be considered for advancement in the recruitment process.
