Job description

The City of Wichita is NOT an E-Verify Employer. Distinguishing Features of Work Engineering Technician 2 (Design) plays a vital role in shaping Wichita's infrastructure from concept to construction. This position delivers high-impact technical design support for public works projects that directly affect neighborhoods, transportation networks, and utility systems citywide.

Working under the direction of a licensed Professional Engineer, the Engineering Technician 2 (Design) performs advanced computer-aided drafting, interprets legal plats and right-of-way documents, and produces accurate engineering drawings that meet City standards. The role bridges engineering theory and field execution by supporting inspections, maintaining construction details, processing as-built plans, and managing technical data and GIS layers. Precision, accountability, and consistency are essential, as this position ensures design accuracy, constructability, and regulatory compliance.

The Engineering Technician 2 (Design) is a trusted technical contributor whose work safeguards quality, efficiency, and long-term public value. Workdays and Hours - Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm Bargaining Unit: Employee Council **Posting may close at any time ** Examples of Work Performed Perform computer-aided drafting work on engineering and architectural projects in AutoCAD under the supervision of a professional engineer. Interpreting plats and legal descriptions to draw improvement districts and calculate lot areas with the use of AutoCAD.

Manage database tracking spreadsheets. Maintain various data and GIS layers electronically. Perform final inspection of construction work.

Maintain standard construction details. Process as-built plans. These examples are not intended to be all-inclusive.

Other related duties may be assigned as needed. Requirements of Work Working knowledge of principles and practices of civil engineering. Working knowledge of City of Wichita standard specifications.

Ability to read and interpret construction plans. Ability to use a computer to access, interpret and record information. Skill in making engineering computations, estimates and designs, and in preparing plans and specifications.

Skill in writing reports and preparing cost estimates. Ability to create exhibits and edit geo-databases using ArcMap software and GIS tools. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and the public.

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license. An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Experience and Training Required Experience and Training Five (5) years of engineering support experience performing civil design-related duties, including computer-aided drafting, plan preparation, interpretation of construction plans, and preparation of construction documentation OR Graduation from an accredited Engineering Technology program with three (3) years of engineering support experience. Ability to obtain Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) Certified Inspection Training (CIT) within six (6) months of employment. A valid Kansas Driver's License.

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship. Preferred Experience and Training Six (6) months of supervisory experience. Six (6) months experience supporting municipal civil engineering projects.

Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement. Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
