Job Description:

The Electrical Field Service Technician position performs electrical and controls field service work in a industrial computer-based environment on envelope converting equipment. Working as part of a team, the technician will test, install, start up and demonstrate envelope converting equipment - including PLC/servo-controls die-cutting, gumming, folding, seam-forming and window-patching sections. The role also involves training customers on the operation and electrical maintenance of this equipment in their facility.

The technician diagnoses and resolves electrical, controls, and process issues on envelope converting equipment, both on-site and remotely. This includes troubleshooting PLC and servo control systems, interpreting electrical schematics and wiring diagrams, identifying root causes of equipment faults, and implementing corrective actions to minimize customer downtime. The technician also provides ongoing technical support to customers and communicates recurring issues to engineering to support continuous improvement of the equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Work from assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, machine manuals, technical procedures, and specifications to install envelope converting machines - including PLC panels, servo drives, VFDs, sensors and vision/registration systems on die-cutting, gumming, folding and seam-forming sections.
  • Setup and operate envelope converting equipment to produce customer products. Instruct operators in setup and operating procedures, and provide technical and practical answers to customer questions or problems.
  • Perform routine and emergency breakdown electrical service on company envelope converting equipment. Determine the root cause of problems and prepare reports documenting findings and solutions.
  • Assist installation coordinator with pre- and post- installation meetings and audits at customer facilities, including assessing manpower needs.
  • Report quality issues and take corrective action to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Act as liaison between customer and company, maintaining positive customer relationships.
  • Prepare and submit reports as required.
  • Provide leadership, coaching and mentoring to less experienced personnel.
  • Work in a team of field service team members, contractors and/or customer personnel through the project stages.
  • Create and sustain a safety environment that promotes a safety mindset, embraces training and adherence to safety policies and procedures, and encourages awareness and correction of safety hazards.
  • Ensure that work areas and equipment are maintained in clean and orderly condition and all safety regulations are observed; report and correct any unsafe work practices or conditions immediately.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • An Associate degree in Electrical Technology, Electro-Mechanical Technology or a related field is required.
  • B.S. degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or Electrical Technology is preferred.
  • 18 years old at the time of hire to operate equipment

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • A strong electrical and controls skill set - including PLC and servo drive troubleshooting, motor and VFD diagnostics, schematic and wiring diagram reading, and sensor/vision-system calibration - is required to complete a variety of work in this position.
  • Knowledge of basic web handling and industrial experience, with focus in envelope converting controls - including registration and tension control, print-mark/vision sensing, and PLC-driven die-cutting, gumming, folding and window-patching sections - is a plus.
  • Experience as an envelope machine adjuster, electrician, or controls technician on die-cutting, folding, gumming, or seam-forming equipment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Rockwell or Bosch PLC platforms is highly recommended
  • Familiarity with Indramat or Rockwell servo control systems
  • Ability to travel at least 50% of the time.
