Johnson Controls is hiring a Controls Systems Designer to support a large educational campus in Chicago, Illinois. This is a site dedicated role focused on the hardware design portion of building automation and controls projects. The Designer will work in close partnership with a site-dedicated Controls Engineer who is focused on software, coordination across projects, and change management.

What you will do
As a Controls Systems Designer, you will be responsible for developing hardware-focused design deliverables for building automation and control systems following project award. You will translate engineering direction, contract documents, and site requirements into accurate, high-quality hardware designs that support successful installation and execution.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop control system hardware designs using Visio and CCT/SCT design tools

  • Create and maintain hardware documentation including panel layouts, wiring diagrams, network layouts, device placement, and bills of material

  • Support multiple projects across the same site, ensuring consistency and adherence to site standards

  • Partner closely with the site-dedicated Controls Engineer to align hardware design with software sequences, change orders, and project updates

  • Coordinate with project teams, field technicians, and installation partners to support constructability and smooth execution

  • Revise designs to support approved change orders and evolving site requirements

  • Follow established quality, safety, and documentation standard

What we are looking for

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in engineering, electronics, drafting, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience

  • Minimum of 2 to 3 years of experience supporting controls or building automation projects

  • Experience developing hardware-focused design documentation for building systems

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple design tasks simultaneously

  • Effective communication skills and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with building automation or HVAC control systems

  • Familiarity with mechanical systems, control panels, low-voltage wiring, and field installation practices

  • Experience working in educational, healthcare, or large commercial facilities

  • Prior experience supporting site-dedicated or campus-style projects

This is a site dedicated position based at a large educational facility in Chicago, Illinois. Regular on-site presence is required to support close collaboration with engineering and project teams.
