What does an associate attorney do?

Associate attorneys are early career lawyers who work for law firms to gain experience and hone their skills after completing law school and passing the bar exam for their state. Under the guidance of an experienced attorney or a partner in the firm, associate attorneys assist with cases by conducting legal research and writing reports, legal briefs, and other documents. Associate attorneys also negotiate with colleagues from other law firms, participate in jury selection, and help argue cases in court.

What is an associate attorney?

An Associate Attorney is a licensed lawyer who works at a law firm and typically has less experience than partners or senior attorneys. Their responsibilities often include conducting legal research, drafting documents, meeting with clients, and assisting with case preparation. Associate Attorneys usually work under the supervision of more senior lawyers and are on a partnership track, meaning they may eventually be considered for partnership in the firm. Their role is crucial for supporting the firm's legal work and gaining experience in various areas of law.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, a state bar license, and strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, document management systems, and e-discovery tools is typically required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, time management, and teamwork are vital soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications ensure effective case preparation, compliance with legal standards, and successful collaboration with clients and colleagues.

What are some common challenges faced by associate attorneys in their first few years, and how can they overcome them?

Associate attorneys often encounter challenges such as managing a heavy workload, adapting to the fast-paced environment of a law firm, and learning to balance billable hour requirements with professional development. Building strong organizational and time-management skills is crucial to handle multiple cases and deadlines effectively. Additionally, seeking mentorship, actively communicating with senior attorneys, and asking for feedback can help associates navigate complex matters and grow professionally within the firm.

Job description

Join a top-performing family law team where your work changes lives โ€” and where flexibility, mentorship, and unlimited earning potential aren't just perks, they're how the firm runs.
Why This Role
Sterling Lawyers is one of the fastest-growing family law firms in the country, built on a fixed-fee model that frees attorneys from billable-hour pressure and lets them focus on doing great work for clients. We're expanding our presence in Sheboygan and looking for an attorney to lead that growth โ€” someone who wants ownership over a practice, not just a caseload. This is a chance to build real roots in a community, work alongside a genuinely collaborative team, and grow your career with a firm that invests in your craft
What You'll Do
  • Guide clients through family law matters with clarity, compassion, and strategic thinking
  • Investigate the facts of each case โ€” financial records, expert evaluations, prior filings โ€” and build strong, well-researched positions
  • Apply relevant case law and court precedent to strengthen client outcomes
  • Pursue efficient, cost-effective resolutions for clients, reserving litigation for when it's truly the best path
  • Draft pleadings, exhibits, financial disclosures, support calculations, and prenuptial agreements
  • Represent clients in court with confidence and skill
  • Mentor junior attorneys and delegate effectively to your support team
What You Bring
Required:
  • Family law experience โ€” this is non-negotiable for this role
  • Based in and working from Sheboygan, serving clients across Sheboygan, Ozaukee, Calumet, Fond du Lac, and Manitowoc counties
  • Juris Doctorate
  • Active Wisconsin Bar license, in good standing
Preferred:
  • 5+ years of family law litigation experience
  • Familiarity with courts and procedure in the Sheboygan region
  • Experience mentoring junior attorneys or leading a team
What You'll Get
  • 75,000โ€“$175,000 average annual compensation
  • Health, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance โ€” effective the first of the month after you start
  • 401(k) matching
  • Company-paid Short- and Long-Term Disability
  • Paid vacation and holidays
  • Real mentorship and coaching to sharpen your craft
  • World-class practice support so you can focus on clients, not paperwork
About Sterling Lawyers
Sterling Lawyers, LLC (sterlinglawyers.com) is a rapidly growing firm practicing family law exclusively, with a fixed-fee model that trades billable-hour stress and micromanagement for a supportive, modern, high-performing team.
If you want strong compensation, deep job security, genuine mentorship, and a front-row seat at one of the most innovative family law firms in the U.S. โ€” we'd love to hear from you.
Ready to build something great in Sheboygan? Apply today.
