Position Purpose

The image and reputation of the Garden depend upon well-maintained Garden facilities and supporting infrastructure. The major priority of the Maintenance Technician is to keep the Gardens Infrastructure, Buildings and Systems in top operational condition and appearance. The Technician is responsible for the overall care, preventative and corrective maintenance of all facilities, equipment and infrastructure (excluding plant bed areas/systems) throughout the Desert Botanical Garden.


Position Information

Job Type: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

Pay: $23/hr


Essential Duties

  • General Maintenance: Keep the Garden's buildings, roads, parking lots, utilities, fences, gates and fleet vehicles in good operating condition. Service the Garden's electrical, plumbing, mechanical and refrigeration systems and follow the schedule of planned preventative maintenance activities prepared by the Facilities and Maintenance Manager.
  • Safety: Support DBG Safety Manager to ensure that safe conditions exist in the Garden at all times by monitoring the condition of public paths, patios, buildings, and equipment and review work practices to ensure maximum safety for all. Safely operate all equipment, hand and power tools.
  • Special Projects: Execute and successfully complete maintenance related work orders, perform minor construction duties with limited supervision, and work collectively with outside contractors, vendors, service partners and internal DBG staff. Effectively perform preventive and corrective maintenance tasks on the Garden's buildings and structures.
  • Schedule: May be required to work shifts, odd hours and weekends as necessary
  • Other: Perform related general tasks as requested by the Facilities and Maintenance Manager, senior members of the Facilities staff and/or the Senior Director of Facilities and Operations.

Requirements

  • Must be able to lift up to 90 pounds.
  • Completion of an Associates Applied Science (AAS) program in Building or Construction Trades; or a minimum of 2 years Building trades experience at the Journey level; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must have good communication skills and ability to manage time to complete tasks properly and within the time allotted.
  • Must possess exemplary Guest Service Skills
  • Ability to use radio, telephone, and computer to communicate and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Must be willing and able to work varied hours and long shifts including holidays and weekends.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of physical positions, including sitting, bending, standing, and walking.

Equipment Used

Some typical office equipment including two-way radio and telephone. Use of a motorized cart, hand tools, ladders and some heavy machinery (if certified) is expected.

Internal Communication

Frequent interaction with Garden employees at all levels of the organization. Occasional visitor interaction expected.

External Communication

Regular communication with vendors and contractors is expected.

Working Conditions

While some work will take place in a regular office environment, a great deal of outdoor work is expected, sometimes in extreme weather conditions. Must be able to sit, walk, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, see, hear, speak, read and type. Manual dexterity and the ability to lift up to 90 pounds required.
