What is the difference between Associate Amft vs Licensed Amft?

AspectAssociate AmftLicensed Amft
CredentialsRequires completion of educational and supervised experience requirements; not yet licensedMust hold a valid license to practice independently
Work EnvironmentTypically works under supervision in clinics, hospitals, or community settingsWorks independently with full licensure in similar settings
ResponsibilitiesAssists licensed therapists, performs basic therapy tasksPerforms therapy independently, develops treatment plans

The main difference between an Associate Amft and a Licensed Amft is the level of independence and credentials. An Associate Amft is in the process of completing licensing requirements and works under supervision, while a Licensed Amft can practice independently with full licensure.

What are the typical supervision and mentorship experiences like for an Associate AMFT in their first role?

As an Associate AMFT (Associate Marriage and Family Therapist), you will work under the supervision of a licensed therapist, typically attending weekly individual or group supervision sessions. Supervisors provide guidance on clinical cases, ethical concerns, and documentation practices, helping you develop your skills and confidence. The supervision process is collaborative and supportive, fostering professional growth and ensuring you meet licensure requirements. Additionally, you'll often work closely with multidisciplinary teams, gaining exposure to diverse perspectives and therapeutic approaches.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate AMFT (Associate Marriage and Family Therapist), and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate AMFT, you need a master's degree in marriage and family therapy or a related field, along with registration as an AMFT with your state licensing board. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and evidence-based therapeutic modalities such as CBT or family systems therapy is typically required. Strong communication, empathy, and active listening skills help build rapport and effectively support clients through sensitive issues. These competencies are crucial for delivering ethical, effective care and progressing toward full licensure as a marriage and family therapist.

What is an Associate AMFT?

An Associate AMFT, or Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, is an individual who has completed a qualifying graduate program in marriage and family therapy and is registered with the appropriate state board as an associate. This designation allows them to gain supervised clinical experience required for full licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT). Associate AMFTs work under the supervision of licensed professionals to provide therapy to individuals, couples, and families, focusing on relationships and mental health. They must complete a certain number of supervised hours and pass relevant exams before becoming fully licensed MFTs.

Job description

About Meridian Counseling
Meridian Counseling is looking for licensed mental health therapists to join our team! Meridian is a new and growing group practice that is dedicated to helping our clients integrate mental health into their everyday health and wellness routines. Learn more at www.meridian-counseling.com
About the role
  • We value our clinicians and their own professional goals. Working for us gives you the flexibility to create the "perfect position" based on your personal and career goals.
  • This is a part-time position working a minimum of 25 hours per week.
  • Meridian Counseling will provide group and triadic supervision as an unpaid benefit as well as CEU training, professional development opportunities, and clinical growth to associates dedicated to up-leveling their clinical skills.
  • We guarantee that we will provide you with both private pay and insurance-based client referrals (as many as you would like based on your financial goals).
  • Clinicians have the opportunity for bonus pay, through our incentive program.
  • Our clinicians set their own hours/caseload and have the option for hourly or salaried positions and benefits.
  • Meridian offers the opportunity to participate in monthly consultations with our clinical team. (Our clinicians are awesome and always willing to support each other in professional growth).
  • Meridian has strong values in building community and genuine connection - we want to assure our values are always intertwined within our team culture! We are excited to offer our monthly team events (training, workshops, volleyball, hikes, game nights, etc)!
  • We will handle your billing, credentialing, and marketing and provide you with clients and office space. Your job is to show up, see your clients, and take notes!
  • This is the perfect position for someone who wants the autonomy of private practice, while still feeling connected to a community and receiving consultation, as needed.
  • If you love doing clinical work and do not want to deal with all the administrative and business headaches that come with running a practice - this is the position for you!

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Psychology, Counseling, or similar.
