The work we do has an impact on millions of lives, and you can be a part of it.
We help protect our customers against life's uncertainties. Regardless of where you work within the company, you'll be helping provide protection and peace of mind when our customers need it most.
Protective is seeking a motivated and analytical Actuarial Assistant or Actuarial Assistant II to join our Universal Life (UL) Valuation Team. As a member of Protective's Actuarial Student Program, you will gain valuable hands-on experience while receiving support for actuarial exam progression and professional development. This role offers the opportunity to partner with valuation actuaries, financial reporting professionals, and cross-functional business teams to support the accurate valuation and financial reporting of Universal Life products.
In this role, you will gain exposure to Statutory, GAAP, and Tax valuation processes, actuarial modeling, financial reporting, reserve analysis, and regulatory reporting. You will contribute to quarterly valuation activities, model enhancements, process improvement initiatives, and the implementation of new products and reporting capabilities. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in developing expertise in life insurance valuation and financial reporting while progressing toward actuarial credentials.
The level and title will be determined based on the selected candidate's actuarial experience, exam progress, and demonstrated capabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Support quarterly valuation and financial reporting processes for Universal Life products.

  • Analyze period-over-period financial results, explain key drivers, and document findings.
  • Maintain, test, and enhance valuation models and supporting processes.
  • Assess the impact of model, assumption, and methodology updates on financial results.
  • Support actuarial testing, regulatory reporting, and governance activities.
  • Develop analytical tools, reporting solutions, and process automation initiatives to improve efficiency.
  • Provide valuation support for new products, product enhancements, and other strategic initiatives.
  • Prepare reports, exhibits, and documentation to effectively communicate results and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with Finance, Financial Reporting, Pricing, Modeling, and other actuarial teams to support business objectives.

Core Competencies (skills, knowledge and abilities):

  • Programming experience or aptitude with VBA, Python, PowerShell, or similar tools.
  • Familiarity with actuarial modeling systems; experience with PolySystems is a plus.
  • Knowledge of life insurance valuation concepts and financial reporting frameworks.
  • Experience with Power BI, Tableau, Power Query, or similar data visualization and reporting tools is a plus.
  • Demonstrated curiosity and desire to understand the drivers of financial performance.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, or a related quantitative field.
  • Minimum of two actuarial exams completed.
  • Commitment to continued actuarial exam progress.
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Interest in life insurance valuation, financial reporting, and actuarial modeling.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Four or more actuarial exams completed.
  • Significant progress toward Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) designation.
  • Actuarial experience in valuation, financial reporting, modeling, pricing, or related analytical functions.
  • Experience in the insurance or financial services industry.
  • Experience with PolySystems or other actuarial modeling platforms.
  • Exposure to Statutory, GAAP, and Tax valuation methodologies.
