What are different types of assistants?

Assistants come in various forms, including executive assistants who support high-level managers, administrative assistants handling office tasks, virtual assistants providing remote support, and specialized assistants such as legal or medical assistants. Each type requires different skills, tools, and sometimes certifications, and they may work in office environments or remotely with flexible schedules.

What can I do as an assistant?

As an assistant, you can perform tasks such as managing schedules, organizing files, handling correspondence, and providing administrative support. The role often requires strong organizational skills, communication abilities, and proficiency with office software. Assistants may work in various settings including offices, healthcare, or legal environments, and some positions require specific certifications or experience.

What is the difference between Assistant vs Receptionist?

AspectAssistantReceptionist
Primary RoleSupports specific departments or executives with administrative tasksManages front desk, greets visitors, handles phone calls
Work EnvironmentOffice settings, often within teams or departmentsFront office, reception area, customer-facing roles
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma; sometimes additional certificationsHigh school diploma; customer service skills
Common UsageAssisting managers, executives, or teams with administrative supportHandling visitor inquiries, scheduling, and front desk operations

While both roles involve administrative tasks, assistants typically provide support to specific departments or individuals, whereas receptionists focus on front desk duties and visitor management. The assistant role often requires more specialized support skills, while receptionists primarily handle customer interactions and front office responsibilities.

What is an assistant?

Assistants are professionals who provide administrative, organizational, or personal support to individuals or teams within a company or organization. Their tasks can include managing schedules, handling correspondence, organizing meetings, preparing documents, and performing various clerical duties. Depending on the workplace, assistants may also help with research, travel arrangements, or basic project management. Their role is essential for ensuring that operations run smoothly and efficiently. Assistants often serve as the first point of contact and play a key part in facilitating communication and workflow.

How do assistants typically manage competing priorities and last-minute requests?

Assistants often juggle multiple tasks and must adapt quickly to shifting priorities, especially when supporting busy executives or teams. Effective time management, clear communication, and proactive organization are crucial for handling last-minute requests. Many Assistants rely on digital tools such as calendars, task managers, and communication platforms to stay organized and ensure nothing falls through the cracks. Building strong relationships with colleagues also helps in coordinating tasks and setting realistic expectations when urgent needs arise.

What kind of assistants make the most money?

Executive assistants and specialized assistants, such as legal or medical assistants, tend to earn the highest salaries among assistant roles due to their advanced skills and responsibilities. These positions often require additional certifications, experience, and proficiency with specific tools or software, which can contribute to higher pay.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant, strong organizational abilities, time management, and proficiency in office procedures are essential, typically supported by a high school diploma or associate degree. Familiarity with office software like Microsoft Office Suite, calendar management tools, and basic bookkeeping systems is often required. Excellent communication, discretion, and adaptability are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure efficient support to teams or executives, helping organizations operate smoothly and effectively.

Job description

Assistant Controller

Penticton, BC (On-Site)

$70,000 - $85,000

ABOUT US

STRIVE is a Vancouver-based recruitment firm offering recruitment solutions in the Professional Services, Manufacturing, and Industrial sectors. Our team is committed to finding the right fit for both clients and candidates — we take the time to understand what drives people and businesses to make lasting connections. At STRIVE, we’re passionate about placing top talent in great organizations where they can make an impact.

THE ROLE

Our client, a well-established and rapidly growing manufacturer in the outdoor products industry, is seeking an Assistant Controller to join their finance team in Penticton, BC.

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious accounting professional who is actively pursuing their CPA and is looking to develop into a future finance leader.

Reporting directly to senior leadership, you'll gain exposure to all facets of the accounting function while supporting a thriving manufacturing business experiencing significant year-over-year growth.

The organization is in an exciting phase of expansion, continuing to exceed previous sales targets while growing its dealer network across North America. With new partnerships underway with major national retailers and a strong presence in the U.S. market, this is an opportunity to join a business with impressive momentum and long-term stability.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys balancing hands-on accounting responsibilities with analytical work. While you'll own many of the day-to-day accounting functions, you'll also have the opportunity to contribute to process improvements, financial analysis, and operational decision-making as you continue developing your technical expertise.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare and post journal entries while maintaining accurate general ledger accounts.
  • Complete monthly bank and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Support month-end and year-end close activities, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.
  • Manage day-to-day accounts payable, accounts receivable, vendor payments, invoicing, and expense reporting.
  • Prepare and file GST/PST returns, payroll remittances, and assist with year-end tax preparation.
  • Perform financial analysis and reporting to support operational and business decisions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, strengthen internal controls, and increase efficiencies.
  • Maintain accounting records within the ERP system while supporting ongoing system and process improvements.
  • Collaborate with leadership and cross-functional teams to support the organization's continued growth.
  • Assist with additional accounting and finance projects as required.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

We're seeking someone who is looking to build their career—not simply perform bookkeeping functions. This position is well suited to an accounting professional who enjoys understanding the "why" behind the numbers and wants to expand their analytical and financial reporting capabilities.

  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • Active enrollment in the CPA program (designation not yet required).
  • Experience in accounting, public practice, or a progressive accounting role with exposure to full-cycle accounting.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience working with ERP or accounting systems.
  • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to interpret financial data and provide meaningful insights.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize competing deadlines.
  • A proactive attitude, willingness to learn, and desire to grow into increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Manufacturing experience is considered an asset but is not required.

WHY JOIN?

  • Join a financially strong manufacturer experiencing exceptional growth across North America.
  • Be part of a business that continues to expand its customer base through new dealer partnerships and major retail opportunities.
  • Work alongside an experienced finance leader who is invested in mentoring and developing the right individual.
  • Gain meaningful exposure to financial reporting, analysis, process improvement, and operational accounting.
  • Develop your skills beyond transactional accounting while continuing your CPA journey.
  • Enjoy a collaborative, flexible, and supportive work environment where your contributions will have a direct impact on the business.
