Job description

Assistant Freeway Operations Engineer
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a skilled Assistant Freeway Operations Engineer to join our Traffic Management Division. This position is a key part of the Freeway Operations Team, focusing on the technology and strategies that keep Utah's highways moving efficiently.
About the Role
In this role, you will support the daily operations and long-term improvement of ramp metering and Express Lanes systems. You will combine engineering principles with data analysis to monitor highway performance, diagnose technical issues, and implement solutions that improve safety and travel reliability.
Over the next several years, this team will lead the rollout of new traffic technologies. You will use real-world data to test these systems and guide future improvements. By optimizing how we manage our lanes, you will directly support UDOT's mission: Keeping Utah Moving.
Position Details
Here is some important information about this position:
  • Salary Range: $45.53 - $72.25
  • FT/PT Status: Full Time
  • Background Check: You must successfully pass a criminal history check.
  • Schedule Code: B - Competitive Career Service (12 month probationary period)
  • Location: Traffic Operations Center - 2060 South 2760 West, Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Travel: May need to travel within the State of Utah. While most of the travel will be within the Wasatch Front, this position provides support statewide.

Key Responsibilities
As the Assistant Freeway Operations Engineer, you will:
  • Optimize Performance: Monitor and adjust Express Lanes and ramp meters to ensure smooth traffic flow.
  • Analyze Data: Use real-time and historical data to identify traffic trends, system errors, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Manage Systems: Program and calibrate field equipment and central software systems.
  • Quality Control: Perform data audits (QA/QC) to ensure our operational datasets are accurate and reliable.
  • Innovate: Test and evaluate new equipment, software, and pilot programs.
  • Collaborate: Work closely with maintenance crews, Control Room operators, and project teams to solve complex problems.
  • Train & Mentor: Educate Control Room staff on new operational procedures and system functions.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
  • Licensure: You must hold a current Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Utah.
  • Problem Solving: Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical or operational issues.
  • Independence: Ability to take initiative and work effectively without constant supervision.
  • Communication: Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.

Underfill Option
Applicants who are not currently licensed as a Professional Engineer in Utah may be considered for an Engineer II ($40.24 hourly) or Engineer I ($35.93 hourly) based on qualifications.
  • The qualifications for the Engineer II level are:
    • A bachelor's degree, or higher, in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
    • Proof of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE).
    • At least two years of post-graduate engineering experience.
  • The qualifications for the Engineer I level are:
    • A bachelor's degree, or higher, in a Civil Engineering or related engineering discipline.
    • Proof of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE).

Preferred Qualifications
We give preference to candidates who have experience in:
  • Traffic flow theory or traffic operations.
  • Data analysis tools such as SQL, Python, or R.
  • Managing large datasets and performance reporting.
  • Transportation technology like traffic signals, ramp metering, or managed lane systems.
