Job Description:

Are you looking for challenging and meaningful work on nationally significant tunnel and underground infrastructure projects? Schnabel approaches complex infrastructure challenges with creativity, technical excellence, and a collaborative mindset. We are seeking an Assistant Resident Engineer to support our Tunnels Business Unit Program Management and Construction Management practice. This role provides the opportunity to work alongside industry leaders on technically demanding projects while continuing to grow professionally.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily on-site construction management support and oversight for tunnel and underground infrastructure projects, including excavation, ground support, shafts, tunnel linings, structural concrete, and associated surface works.
  • Support Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR), Design-Bid-Build, and Design-Build delivery methods through constructability reviews, sequencing evaluations, and early work package coordination.
  • Support the Resident Engineer and leadership with administration of construction contracts, including review of submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, and contractor correspondence.
  • Perform field verification of installed work and reconcile contractor payment applications with observed progress, quantities, and schedule of values.
  • Review contractor baseline schedules, updates, and recovery schedules and validate reported progress against field observations.
  • Assist with evaluation and negotiation of change orders and field modifications related to differing site conditions, constructability challenges, and design refinements.
  • Monitor construction activities for compliance with plans, specifications, safety requirements, environmental permits, and geotechnical recommendations.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by enforcing site-specific safety plans and participating in safety meetings.
  • Coordinate with inspectors, contractors, designers, utility owners, and agency stakeholders to resolve issues and maintain effective project execution.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction Management.
  • 8+ years of construction management or field engineering experience on tunnel, underground, or heavy civil projects.
  • Experience interpreting engineering drawings, geotechnical reports, specifications, and contract requirements.
  • Working knowledge of CPM scheduling, production tracking, and schedule updates.
  • Experience with Oracle Primavera Unifier, Primavera P6, e-Builder, Procore, and Microsoft Office.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification.
  • Certified Construction Manager (CCM).
  • Experience with TBM, SEM/NATM, or cut-and-cover tunneling methods.
  • Prior experience supporting large, technically complex infrastructure programs.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to work on active construction sites and underground environments, including confined spaces, uneven terrain, and variable weather conditions. Ability to work extended or non-standard hours as required by project demands.
  • Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record, credit check.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening.

The compensation range for this position is between $120,000 to $160,000. Compensation for this position may vary based on geographic location and other factors. We remain committed to providing competitive and equitable compensation to all employees, regardless of their location.
