Job Description

Scope of Position:The Expeditors Ground Network Service (GNS) is a dynamic team that is responsible for the design, implementation and execution of a line haul network that supports all of the Expeditors' products and services. The GNS Team has responsibilities of Customer Service, Network Management, Service Provider Management, Procurement, and Compliance amongst many others. The Transportation Planner is a GNS Central position assisting in all aspects of daily line-haul network operations and support. Main focus on administration and branch support, but will also assist in monitoring all carriers and ad hoc activity for on-time departures, load tracking in transit, and timely arrivals. This person may arrange contingencies when needed and communicates delays and issues between branches, gateways, and carriers. GNS Transportation Planner should be detail oriented, curious, and flexible to identify and solve issues quickly and accurately. The Transportation Planner will have regular and consistent communication with the Expeditors Network, the GNS Network (central and regional hubs) and Service Providers.

Schedule: Monday - Friday (various shifts 0600 - 1900)

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Tracking / Tracing
  • Ensure all routes expected to depart and arrive during scheduled shift have been confirmed for assigned region
  • Follow up on all in-transit trucks to ensure accurate ETA is available daily
  • Resolve escalations for excessive detention
  • Ensure exceptions are filed and delays communicated with origin/destination teams
  • Exception Communication / Management
  • In-transit Delays
  • Route Cancellations
  • Loading / Unloading Delays
  • Communication with Hub / inland offices
  • Monitor Lane Volumes
  • Identifying and Collaborating with Regional Hub for Capacity additions, subtractions and re-routes
  • Recommend new routes / departure days or times
  • Procuring Additional Capacity
  • Work with Carriers to add unscheduled trucks
  • Work with Regional Hub on scheduled departure needs
  • Forecast future needs and seek capacity a few days ahead
  • Daily procurement of additional trucks
  • Weekend capacity planning and procurement
  • Regional Service Provider Relationships (existing / new)
  • Work with Regional Hub Manager to grow relationships with local carrier pools
  • Build direct relationships with Existing and New Regional Providers
  • Communication with Hub / inland offices
  • Daily check in calls with Regional Hub
  • Weekly (minimum) check in with inland offices within assigned region
  • Monitor new shipping volumes and changes to existing shipping patterns
  • Have a working knowledge of larger volume shippers in region
  • Recommend new lane / schedule changes
  • Work through Supervisor and Operations Manager to identify new dedicated needs
  • Make recommendations to the scheduling / planning team
  • Activity Analysis

  • Basic Microsoft Office knowledge
  • Fluency in written and spoken English language
  • Bachelor's Degree or 2 years of logistics experience
  • Customer Service and/or Sales Experience
  • Procurement Experience
  • Intermediate Advance knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Leadership Experience
