Job Title: Rear Brakeman

Reports To: Train Master & Operations Manager

Type of position: Hourly / Non-exempt

Employee Classification: Seasonal

Location: Bryson City, NC

Compensation: $16-19 hour, depending on job experience

Job Summary: Wide range of responsibilities to support the Conductor for daily train operations with a focus on safety. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for safe operation of the train.
  • Ensure cars and restrooms are stocked, watered, and operating. 
  • Assist Conductor with seating issues. 
  • Assemble and deboard Wildwater passengers in an organized fashion. 
  • Reports any condition that affects the movement of the train to proper authorities.
  • Provide assistance to passengers with special needs or mobility limitations. 
  • Line track switches basic mechanical inspections and minor repairs on train cars.
  • Courteous support of passengers, managers and fellow employees.
  • Engage customers demonstrating strong customer service skills as part of the overall team.
  • Compliance with GSMR procedures, safety and operating rules.
  • Work with other departments as part of a team to provide passengers/guest with positive memories.
  • Restock all bathrooms with supplies on all cars of the consist
  • Other duties as requested.

Work Environment:

  • Work on and off the train in varied terrain in all weather during both daylight and dark hours. 
  • Work in railyard performing switching and assisting with train movement(s).
  • Varied schedule throughout the year dictated by train schedule and maintenance operations. 

Education, Skill and Work Experience Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and spoken English.
  • Ability to be on your feet for up to 12 hours.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to ascend/descend train steps/ladders and crawl on, under and around locomotive and passengers’ cars while performing needed maintenance functions.
  • Good balance/equilibrium: walk on moving trains, graveled, uneven and/or sloped surfaces that may be wet/slippery while carrying lantern and flashlight.
  • Must possess organizational skills with ability to multi-task while prioritizing workload with practical, flexible and innovative approach to work.
  • Ability to communicate successfully with a variety of personalities and function effectively as a member of a team.
  • Pre-Employment & Random Drug Testing program in compliance with company policy.
  • Take & Pass GCOR Rules Test.
  • Must pass pre-employment work steps physical evaluation.
  • Valid Driver License.
